"Don't Send Meeting Notes by Email - Use the Wiki Instead" - Mark Done

Michael Sampson - Currents

Use corporate wiki or google documents. Rather than waiting until the end of the meeting, take your laptop or iPad and take notes into the corporate wiki or other such tool directly. Mark argues that sending meeting notes by email is a bad idea (slightly edited): " The meeting is over and you were the one who was supposed to make notes. Ok, we won’t discuss now your self-assertion, damage is done. But never send notes via email. You know how this will end?

Collaborative Thinking

Primary reason I don't use wikis is that we have so much information to track across so many sites that I simply can't keep track of them and forget they exist" as opening statement - not sure this is a real argument, can say that about any new tool not just wikis. Valid point is the need for wikis to support rich information (video, diagrams, etc) and need for compliance, audit, DLP, etc etc. Enterprise Wiki leverages publishing infrastructure which powers Enterprise Wikis.

Do wikis change development work?

Joitske Hulsebosch

For one thing, it was interesting to understand from David Weekly what the online wiki niche is. Large companies have their own online packages and stuff (like sharepoint ) but that wikis like pbwiki come in handy for cross company collaboration. People in large companies are setting up wikis because the other applications run behind firewalls that are not accessible to partners in other companies. Maybe I'm putting my expectations of wikis too high in a way.

This year the tool I have used the most to support my work has been a wiki. My wiki of choice is PBWorks – although I am also familiar with Wikispaces, but only through the work of others, i.e. other people have set them up and registered me as a user. I started using wikis in 2008. I can’t remember now why I chose PBWorks in preference to other wikis, but think it must have been because at the time it appeared more intuitive and easier to use.

Wiki as repository for a virtual community

Through a comment on a blogpost by Nancy White I found this article about a virtual community using a discussion list (listserv) in combination with a wiki. The wiki serves as a collaborative repository. I've been advising a community where using an online discussion forum where few people had experience with a wiki. We started a wiki to put knowledge products together. So I'm a little jealous that the community in this article has such an active wiki process.

Samuel said that the open platform of the wiki has trigged a sense of empowerment by employees.

Separately, NYK uses a wiki to keep multiple peer IT groups in the loop on the status of various projects.
