Wiki as repository for a virtual community

Joitske Hulsebosch

Through a comment on a blogpost by Nancy White I found this article about a virtual community using a discussion list (listserv) in combination with a wiki. I've been advising a community where using an online discussion forum where few people had experience with a wiki. So I'm a little jealous that the community in this article has such an active wiki process. The community is a help-based community discussing the applied use of CSS, hence a technical topic.

Technology- where is the action in virtual communities of practice?

Joitske Hulsebosch

One of my questions on technology is whether you can reach a level of virtual community of practice with a substantial impact on actual practice of the members. (I Yet, it would still be a virtual community of practice as the main medium is the newsgroup.

The Art of Building Virtual Communities (Techlearning blog)

John Tropea - Delicious Community

The Question has Changed » The Art of Building Virtual Communities. Youd think developing a virtual learning community (VLC) or online community of practice (CoP) would be easier. After all, its virtual- nobody even has to worry about what to wear! However, with the rise of virtual learning community platforms like Ning and Elgg it is becoming evident that many CoPs are dead on arrival and many others die of neglect early on, in their toddler stage.

We’ll talk more about the important dynamic between communities and networks in a subsequent post. Team-based communities.

Leaders rule - differently, though

Viv Mcwaters

Keith Sawyer has an interesting post about the role of leadership and lessons learned from the impact of internet ‘democratisation’ and the emergence of ‘open source communities’ Keith suggests that the internet has enabled ‘participatory democracy’ evidenced by Wikipaedia and Linux. The question remains however if there is a different form of leadership required in such communities.
