Storytelling

Viv Mcwaters

There is a certain embarrassment about being a storyteller in these times when stories are considered not quite as satisfying as statements and statements not quite as satisfying as statistics; but in the long run, a people is known, not by its statements or its statistics, but by the stories it tells.

This is pitched as a book for storytelling in business, but storytelling is first and foremost an ancient social skill, often ironed out of us by the rationalism and autism of modern life. Whenever I have a conversation with Shawn Callahan I come away feeling stimulated and enriched.

"Storytelling adds human touch to virtual work"

Endless Knots

Storytelling does that--and Kathy Hansen has been collecting up some very good stories of storytellers on her blog, A Storied Career. It was at about this same time that my interest in storytelling was burgeoning; thus, I'm quite interested in convergences between virtual work and storytelling. In her Q&A with A Storied Career , she discussed the value of storytelling in virtual teams.

The Power Of Business Storytelling - Firing up the Imagination

In his useful post, Why Storytelling is the Ultimate Weapon , Jonathan Gottschall, author of The Storytelling Animal, states that science backs up the long-held belief that story is the most powerful means of communicating a message. He refers to a new business storytelling book, Tell to Win , by Peter Guber.    I have written about storytelling a lot on this blog (see Storytelling and Knowledge Management: A Serial in Six Parts ).

and contrasts it with traditional storytelling approaches. In the participatory design experiment we developed a hybrid virtual storytelling playground that augments the real world – a hybrid ecosystem of narratives. It consists of social software tools freely available in the Web, such as microblogs, social repositories of images, and blogs, the real locations in the city, and the storytellers who leave their digital contents.

Portals and KM

This is the session on No Brochures: Digital Storytelling for Nonprofits led by Joe Lambert, Exec Dir Center for Digital Storytelling, Michael Borum, Web Mgr Oxfam America, and Roger Black,  Principal Treesaver Company Inc. Here is another in my series on SXSW events.

Become a Storyteller

Ant's Eyeview Blog

Do you work in a company, where you spend too much time reviewing and agonizing about power point slides? I have. So much time is spent on the look of the slide – template, font, images – that the message is at best, a secondary concern. A presentation is a communication with your audience.

Via Beth Kanter , we got in touch with Steve Bridger who did a presentation on online fundraising. I missed it, but I'll definitely go through his presentation! It was nice to meet up, but even more surprising is that I only found out back home that he is the blogger of the npf2 blog, which I already followed via my bloglines. I realise it's more fun to read a blog when you know something about the blogger. And realize I had never shown any interest in the writers of some of the blogs I read.

Why conversation for reconciliation is important: this story about neighbourhood dialogue in a gentrifying Portland, Oregon neighbourhood contains this sheer nugget of wisdom: “The one who strikes the blow doesn’t know the force of the blow,&# Mowry says. “Only the one who has received the blow knows its force.&#. That quote serves to me to point out why reconciliation efforts led by the striker don’t really heal.
