magic quadrant for social software

Engineers without Fears

James D points us towards the Gartner magic quadrant on team collaboration & social software that Socialtext are quite proud of. My sense is that Gartner's coverage of this area has tended to focus on vendors (in contrast with Forrester's focus on user/buyer behaviour & practices). For me, this highlights the relative immaturity of enterprise social software as a concept - despite individual components having been around for a decade.

With enterprise social technologies, buyers must now assess vendors pursuing three distinct strategies: commoditization, horizontal and vertical solutions, and integration with adjacent technologies.” I was especially interested in his data on social media adoption through a survey of US and European KM decision makers.

More Consolidation in the White Label Social Networking Space: Mzinga Acquires Prospero

John Tropea - Delicious Social Network

This acquisition news comes on the heels of another acquisition in the space - that of ONEsite acquiring Social Platform two weeks ago. The combined activity suggests that the very fragmented and crowded white label social networking space has begun to consolidate. I want to use Russells question about the real use of LinkedIn as a window into what I think is a profound confusion about the nature of sociality, which was partly brought about by recent use of the term social network by Albert Laszlo-Barabasi and Mark Buchanan in the popular science world, and Clay Shirky and others in the social software world. These authors build on the definition of the social network as a map of the relationships between individuals.
