Which prompted an SNS review thang in my head. However there are an increasing number of organisations creating SNS applications within the firewall. sns linkedin facebook plaxoAndrew McAfee recently added to the Serena Facebook-As-Intranet case study. I still have issues with Facebook. I think it's a bit of a mess and doesn't give enough control to the individual in terms of identity management. 80 million active users (according to Facebook) would disagree.

Network spam

Engineers without Fears

sns spamI got my first case of Facebook spam a few weeks ago. A blonde female 20-something from NYC. It could have been worse. I have had several cases of LinkedIn spam. No photos attached so easier to deal with. I am intrigued by the concept of network spam. Mainly because I have spent a lot of my real-world existence feeling like a gate-crasher. And then failing to care. It is the role of every community to make you feel like an outsider - to begin with.

Mock Thesis Proposal: Personal Support Networks During Periods Of Employee Transition, Part 1

Collaborative Thinking

Social Network Sites (SNS) create multiple affordances employees leverage during their employment lifecycle. In this Masters Thesis, I examine how a SNS helps employees during transitional periods such as: joining the company, moving into a new position, and navigating through organizational disruption. Examples of the type of affordances that could be examined include: Mentoring: the ability for an employee to use a SNS as part of a mentoring program with senior staff members.

The work builds on research from boyd and Ellison regarding online social network sites (SNS) where the SNS plays the role of mediated public. The idea of a mediated public where people “perform” in serious or playful manners aligns with research from Pearson regarding the front-stage and back-stage nature of a SNS. She bases her views on previous research on social network sites (SNS) where people construct an identity (i.e.,

Laurel notice this research from Nielsen (& a brief search also reveals this recent data about Australasian SNS usage ). At last, data, sweet data! What can we tell: Kiwis are more into this stuff than Aussies (esp. in the "friend finding" area). The most popular kind of shared media are photos. Lots of people like reading blogs and wikis. Quite a few people update blogs (about 15%). Now the survey refers to "online consumers" as the sample population.

Misunderstanding social networks I think there’s a lot of confusion about the role of social networks (SNs) in learning. There’s another class of language instruction sites that are being called SNs but aren’t. I agree with everything you said about SNs above.

A detailed discussion by James Dellow on the Enterprise 2.0 report from AIIM. As James notes, there are lots of graphs. The data comes from 441 responses to a web-based survey instrument and about a third of respondents were IT personnel - so at best we have indication of trends rather than anything too reliable.

Collaboration vs sharing

John Tropea - Delicious Collaboration

Engineers without Fears Sunday, October 14, 2007 Collaboration vs sharing James Robertson talks about collaboration tools as anti-knowledge sharing. If I understand JR correctly, his point is that collaboration tools are great for specific teams. However each team works in its own context and this leads to the creation of silos which prevents cross-organisational leveraging of this material. He also notes that this cannot be solved simply by the implementation of a search tool. I agree with him.
