Second life secondary experiences

Joitske Hulsebosch

I've never spent time to understand or experiment with Second Life. When I was checking feebs (Dutch site with videos for quote "ICT-ers and professionals" - so ICT-ers are NOT professionals :) I found this tutorial for Second Life by Thorley Linden. Besides using it as tutorial you can use it to get some feel of how it is to walk in second life with an avatar. I also read a book by the writer Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer about his experiences in Second Life.

So I was having a coffee with the ever-engaging Anne Bartlett-Bragg and we were talking about Second Life. second life virtual worlds learningNeither of us are fans (bah humbug) but ABB outlined an interesting experience she had whilst teaching a bunch tradespeople to be trainers. She tried her damnest to pitch the Web 2.0 stuff (blogs, wikis, tagging, etc) and got a big yawn. So she showed them SL and they loved it. What they used it for was quite specific.

second life (2): get rid of the game designers

Engineers without Fears

I suspect that most of the developers that work at Second Life have a background in games. Which is problem because SL is currently too gamer. In game design, you can't make things too easy otherwise you lose the players. There is an optimal level of difficulty and it is not zero. Except that for SL it should be zero - if it wants to attract non-gamers (i.e. I am tired of bumping into walls. I am tired of not knowing how to get off the freakin' beginners' island.

This week I came across an advertisement that goes one step further - it suggests that a person should have an email address that their Second Life avatar can take with them into Real Life. LindenPost.com is now offering email accounts that are tailored to people’s double identities in the “real&# world and Second Life. This is compelling because the language of the LindenPost ad is a departure from most of what we read about Second Life.

People in Second Lifefall in love (very seriously, and sometimes traumatically) all thetime, which would seem to suggest that theres a lot more to love thanpheromones. Tothat extent, Second Life avatars can either amplify or distort ourperception of who the person we love "really" is, depending on a hostof factors.
