Jazz Italian Style by Anna Harrell Celenza: A Brief Review

Portals and KM

Jazz Italian Style by Anna Harwell Celenza explores an interesting, and mostly obscure topic, jazz in Italy in the 1930s under Mussolini and how it might have influenced American jazz. The book happened almost by accident. Celenza is a music historian who found herself spending a few years in Rome.

Review of Four Days in Poland

Michael Sampson - Currents

My time in Poland has come to an end. A few comments after leaving: 1. It was a privilege to visit Poland, and I was very grateful for the opportunity. While I only went outside on two of the four days I was there, and only spent one day doing sightseeing, I’m glad I visited. One of the surprising things I have mentioned to a number of people is how inexpensive everything was. A taxi ride that would be $50 in New Zealand was only $20 in Poland. A suitcase (I didn’t buy it!)

The Value of Literature Reviews

Jenny Connected

There’s an interesting discussion on George Siemen’s blog about the problem with literature reviews – [link]. The points made include: A literature review is tedious to produce and read – I don’t think this is a given in all aspects of a literature review. For a given topic very similar reviews will turn up in a variety of papers. A literature review is a controlling, heritage-preserving system. Even with a literature review I still fall into these traps.
