How to use Net-Map in Monitoring and Evaluation

Net-Map Toolbox

Also, I rarely use Net-Map in a large, quantitative approach – but having it either inform a quantitative evaluation or be informed by it, can enrich both. Are you planning or implementing complex projects, that aim at social change?

So finally, if we wanted to analyze anything quantitatively, we’d have to decide on a cut-off point (define that only links of a certain weight and above will be included) – how would we decide on that and would it make sense?

So you think you’re so important?

Net-Map Toolbox

I have no quantitative analysis of this yet, so this is more of a gut feeling after doing a lot of interviews: Most interviewees seem to be rather spot on when rating their own influence and tend to agree with their network peers. The other day my colleague Regina Birner ( IFPRI ) asked me: “Do you think people generally overestimate their own influence (when drawing Net-Maps and setting up influence towers)?&#. Hm, good question.

How (some) SMEs are using the Web

The survey is collecting lots more data - both quantitative and qualitative. I have just been going through some of the early results from an online survey I launched yesterday. I am looking at how SMEs in the technology/new media sector in the South East of England are using a variety of Web services/technologies to communicate and share information both internally and externally. The results are still coming in so it will be a couple of weeks before I have a full summary I can share.

They were all quantitative – could be counted one way or another. Many years ago I worked with an environmental program that was designed to help bring conservationists and farmers together, to help make agriculture productive and sustainable. Measuring productivity was easy – farmers knew how to collate the costs associated with their particular enterprise, and the market took care of the rest.

Sometimes people see that I’m a dialogue practitioner and the assume that I am not a fan of quantitative measurement. In any endeavour both qualitative and quantitative measurements are important. One problem we often encountered is: How do we consolidate different views of various interview partners to get to a common network map that describes the situation?
