Online Community Strategy

Online surveys are really great at getting quick quantitative feedback, and the results (depending on the tool) are fairly easily to analyze and study. Are you “Member Shy”? In its most basic form, a community strategy is a balance of an organization’s goals and its member’s (a.k.a

Also, I rarely use Net-Map in a large, quantitative approach – but having it either inform a quantitative evaluation or be informed by it, can enrich both. Are you planning or implementing complex projects, that aim at social change?

Who influences the EU’s green infrastructure strategy?

Net-Map Toolbox

We used a mix of qualitative and quantitative social network analysis (SNA) methods to combine actors’ attributes, especially concerning their perceived influence, with structural and relational measures. It’s not just about information flow and regulations: Social pressure considerably influences biodiversity governance in Europe. It is my pleasure to share more Net-Map work done by capable colleagues.

To count or not to count…

Net-Map Toolbox

Sometimes it seems to me as if a lot of people love quantitative methods as the easy way out, “the figures show…&# and then you can’t argue any more. However, if you are really strict in using quantitative network analysis approaches, there are a lot of methodological pre-conditions: All actors need to be of the same kind, that is either individuals or organisations or departments, etc.

Philosophical and methodological issues

So finally, if we wanted to analyze anything quantitatively, we’d have to decide on a cut-off point (define that only links of a certain weight and above will be included) – how would we decide on that and would it make sense?

And I have found that training in quantitative network analysis greatly helps in being able to detect patterns and structural issues, even if you don’t do the actual quantitative analysis. Just from the quantitative indicators. They get excited when we start looking into the quantitative network indicators. I’m struggling with this. And learning while I struggle.

So you think you’re so important?

Net-Map Toolbox

I have no quantitative analysis of this yet, so this is more of a gut feeling after doing a lot of interviews: Most interviewees seem to be rather spot on when rating their own influence and tend to agree with their network peers. The other day my colleague Regina Birner ( IFPRI ) asked me: “Do you think people generally overestimate their own influence (when drawing Net-Maps and setting up influence towers)?&#. Hm, good question.
