Portals as Community Hubs

GrowingPains

The main project I have been working on since last September is as the leader of the implementation of the student web portal of Tilburg University. The initial idea was to build and deliver a portal consisting of a number of predefined portlets (channels to applications).

Portals Not Going Away?

Portals and KM

Remember portals? collaboration systems have replaced portals. One firm even replaced their portal with Facebook and got a lot of PR for it. Perhaps but a recent Forrester report, Portal Servers Refuse To Go Quietly , by Tim Waters found that portals are still popular in many circles. As the report summary cited, “ portal server technologies continue to be widely deployed by enterprises. Downsized budgets can be an obstacle for new portal efforts.

Birth of a portal

GrowingPains

On September 30, the Tilburg University student portal was launched. The portal seems to have been enthusiastically received by both the students (the end users) and the information suppliers (such as faculties, service departments, and student associations) who own the portlets that make up the portal. One of the most important features of the portal to me is, however, that it is owned by the community and will be further developed in a continuous process.

Engineers without Fears

Historically, portals have been all about aggregating content & applications into one easy-to-digest package, more or less personalised to the preferences of the user. What has impressed me about Facebook and MySpace (to an extent) is a different version of portal that they offer. MySpace's blogs and Facebook's status sections create a kind of presence portal. portals collaboration facebook

The Enduring Nature of Blogs and Blogging

Portals and KM

I have long been of the opinion that the word weblog has no crisp meaning anymore, and is going to fade as a defining term for the same reason ‘portal’ did — there are too many patterns to be conveniently contained by one word. But I tend to agree with Clay on the fading away of the term, portals. Likely because it is a specific function, and not a technology, and no one could come up with a better term, whereas portals are simply an IT front end to many things.
