Portals and KM Blog Begins it Eighth Year

Portals and KM

I certainly would not have predicted that when I started the blog on May 2, 2004 with three posts: Is KM the Killer App for Portals?   I had recently learned about blogs and sold a free-lance article to Portals Magazine on them. I picked the title as I had recently led the knowledge management and enterprise portals practice in a division of a large consulting firm. It is hard to imagine that I have been writing this blog for over seven years now.

Portals as Community Hubs

GrowingPains

The main project I have been working on since last September is as the leader of the implementation of the student web portal of Tilburg University. The initial idea was to build and deliver a portal consisting of a number of predefined portlets (channels to applications).

Birth of a portal

GrowingPains

On September 30, the Tilburg University student portal was launched. The portal seems to have been enthusiastically received by both the students (the end users) and the information suppliers (such as faculties, service departments, and student associations) who own the portlets that make up the portal. One of the most important features of the portal to me is, however, that it is owned by the community and will be further developed in a continuous process.

Presencing Portals

Engineers without Fears

Historically, portals have been all about aggregating content & applications into one easy-to-digest package, more or less personalised to the preferences of the user. What has impressed me about Facebook and MySpace (to an extent) is a different version of portal that they offer. MySpace's blogs and Facebook's status sections create a kind of presence portal. portals collaboration facebook

Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Intranet Portals - Not Much New

Portals and KM

Toby Ward recently shared the highlights of the Gartner's magic quadrant for intranet portals. First this is a consolidating and shrinking market, as only 12 enterprise portal vendors remain on Gartner's latest magic quadrant for "horizontal portal products." By 2011, Gartner expects at least 10% of new enterprise portal projects in the Global 2000 to use open-source horizontal portal frameworks.

Portals or Content Service - The Future of Newspapers?

The Boston Globe has taken the portal approach with Boston.com. These two models are hardly mutually exclusive and I think it's likely that the most successful newspapers will become both a portal and a content service.

I took a look at Google Analytics to see what posts people were looking at on this blog in 2008. It seems to get the best data. The top two destinations were the home page to no surprise but I was pleased that the average time on site for people who came first to the home page was 6 minutes, 45 seconds. Thanks to everyone who visited this past year. Here are the next ten destinations with their year of posting.

Your Favorite Portals and KM Posts for Last Quarter and Last Year

Portals and KM

A few days ago this blog passed the 500,000 page view mark. It took almost five years to get there and I know some bloggers do this in a month but it does feel like a milestone. I never thought I would still be blogging five years later when I started in May 2004. Now I do not see stopping. Last year at about this time I started using Google Analytics. Here are the most popular posts that drove the most visits in the last quarter and last year according to this tool.

Are We In A "Post E2.0 Era"?

Collaborative Thinking

Other technologies such as portals, search, content management, instant messaging and presence tools helped round out the typical collaboration manifest (even though they were not technically collaboration tools per se). Portals represented the best-in-class capability back then to enable contextual collaboration since application and collaboration portlets could be composed into a single, integrated user experience.
