Prototyping and strategic planning

Chris Corrigan

It got me thinking this morning about some of the tools I use for planning these days. We have to be careful about the tools we employ because some are great for linear, predictive planning and others require us to work on challenges differently.

Open Plan Offices Close the Brain

Michael Sampson - Currents

In his summary post on personal effectiveness in 2013, David Rock comments on how open plan offices close the brain : “ Open plan offices are all the rage. Putting Some Lean Planning in Lean Startup

This was originally an answer I posted in a Quora group, but I thought I would repost it here with some edits. Read the original, in context, here. After working with and owning several startups, it is clear that startup owners regularly overload themselves with work. It’s part of the startup mythos.

Inappropriate action planning makes me sad

Chris Corrigan

And no action plans, no next steps, no commitments, no necessary reports. And sometimes, there are gatherings where next steps and action plans are important and necessary and are the reason why we are gathering. I have begun to notice that when I see conference agendas with “next steps and action plans” attached to them (and especially attached to the end of the last day when everyone is tired and most people have left), I become sad.

10 messages in planning digital engagement with young people

Social Reporter

Below are 10 messages to consider in planning any project using digital technology to engage young people and address the key challenges they face. Online tools can support local community building and action – and projects should plan to work both on the web, and in local or face-to-face settings. I think most are relevant to any digital engagement process.

First Steps to Planning a MOOC

Jenny Connected

We started planning for this MOOC last week – I blogged about it here – [link]. There has already been a lot written about planning and running a MOOC. George , Marion and I had our second Skype planning meeting yesterday to discuss the MOOC that we are planning for May/June this year. Organising a MOOC really brings home the difficulty of planning for an unspecified number of people, especially in terms of the choice of technologies.

Open Plan Offices: The Increased Noise Cancels the Collaborative Benefit

A new study published by the University of Sydney calls into question the value of open plan offices yet again. Open plan offices attract the highest levels of worker dissatisfaction, with cramped quarters, lack of privacy and noise topping the list of gripes, a large study has found. Planning workshops

Viv Mcwaters

If there is one thing we have learnt about planning workshops is that the plan will not survive contact with the group. Plan by all means – it’s part of being well prepared. And be prepared to throw the plan away when faced with the reality of facilitating a complex system aka a group of people. Planning workshops is a post from: vivmcwaters.com.au. RSSP: Really simple strategic planning

Chris Corrigan

Over the years I’ve written about how convoluted strategic planning gets for most organizations. Most of the small non-profits I work with seem to think it’s wise to use mainstream business strategic planning frameworks to plot their way forward. Even though these frameworks are pursued with the best of intentions, for many volunteer Boards of small and meagerly funded organizations, it’s usually overkill to adopt highly technical frameworks for planning.

Plan Your Day in 7 Steps

Michael Sampson - Currents

Bojan offers 7 simple steps to plan your day perfectly : " It’s a known fact that people who are planning their time, simply achieve more. Not only do you get visualization of your time when you plan it, you also figure out, right on the spot, which tasks are important, and those which aren’t. Until you start to procrastinate, but with careful planning, that can be avoided. If you don’t have time to plan, you’re planning to fail. Plan your locations.

Neighbourhood planning is already being ‘re-thought’

Neighbourhoods

Today saw the publication of a paper from ResPublica in association with the RIBA on Re-thinking neighbourhood planning: from consultation to collaboration. Neighbourhood planning was introduced not much more than a year ago, but apparently this is long enough for it to need ‘re-thinking’ – by an organisation whose director is an acknowledged influence on contemporary Tory policy.   Planning is complex (unavoidably?)
