There has been a lot of discussion on the web over the past 12 months or so about what we mean by openness. How can we have confidence in the footprints, when the footprint ( a graphic description of a learning experience), if individually drawn, depicts an interpretation of the learning experience based on subjective personal reflection on that experience, and the scoring factors themselves can be open to personal interpretation? This ongoing work in seeking to describe and clarify what we mean by emergent and prescribed learning is progressing on our open wiki ‘ Footprints of Emergence ’.

What poets can tell us about ‘openness’ and ‘sharing’

Jenny Connected

This week I have realised that I now also have a new perspective on the meaning of ‘openness’. MOOCs themselves are all about openness, but I didn’t expect poetry to be too. MOOCs, in their original conception, were intended to be free and open to anyone with an internet access. No registration or ‘signing up’ was required and it was expected that participants would ‘openly’ share their knowledge, expertise, ideas and thinking in the course.
