The return of Big Society debate via its critics, friendly or otherwise

Social Reporter

OCS have commissioned four community and and voluntary sector organisations to report on what Big Society means for the groups they represent. In part this might be seen as consolation for the organisations having lost some core funding when they were dropped as OCS strategic partners. All four were given an OCS advisory role in lieu of being retained as a strategic partner.

Annotated Bibliography: Background For Literature Review Project

Collaborative Thinking

The authors focus on the psychological aspects of organizational identity (OI) and commitment (OC) to determine the influence of hierarchy on employee attitudes, behaviors, and well-being. Their findings suggest that a strong OI and OC influences the level of attentiveness and engagement of employees but the degree of agency may vary depending on where that person is situated in the hierarchical level of that organization.

Collaborative Thinking

What this is not: This is not about hosted unified communications or even hosted OCS. It is better to think about this initial effort as "more LCS-like than OCS-like". the web conferencing component within OCS is not available - instead, organizations need to use Office Live Meeting.

Persistent Group Chat in Office Communications Server R2

Collaborative Thinking

After the acquisition was completed, Microsoft has kept quiet on exactly how it would adapt Parlano's technology and deliver it as part of Office Communications Server (OCS). With OCS R2 launched in February 2009 that mystery has been resolved: Persistent Group Chat - Downloadable Data Sheet. Persistent Group Chat - Official OCS R2 Launch Video. Note: Select "Breakout Sessions" from the top menu, then select "Introducing Group Chat in OCS" .

Microsoft's Unified Communications Predictions

Collaborative Thinking

I'm not so sure (acceleration of software-based replacement of hardware systems) - but then again, I don't focus on hardware :) but I imagine that in some companies, the economic downturn will stretch timelines and people might want to extend current hardware/software "PBX" systems rather than rip-and-replace in favor of OCS. As OCS matures and scales (it's current web conferencing feature taps out at around 300 or less people) - does that mean Office Live Meeting becomes roadkill?

UC And Web 2.0 / Enterprise 2.0

Collaborative Thinking

I also don't see enough cross-team synergy on the Microsoft side between SharePoint and OCS. The OCS team is heavily focused (obsessed perhaps) with cracking the code necessary to dominate the telephony space. Over on the Enterprise 2.0 blog , Irwin Lazar discusses whether UC and Web 2.0 are "friend or foe"? Here are some of my thoughts. Deeper commentary can be found here: Turning Instant Messaging and Presence Upside-Down & Inside-Out. Unified Communications.

Enterprise Versions Of Twitter (updated)

Collaborative Thinking

For instance, can Microsoft exploit its acquisition of Parlano and deliver it as a Twitter-like service within OCS and can IBM expand Sametime to emulate the application behaviors of Twitter-like tools. There are several emerging (e.g., ESME, Laconica (open source), OraTweet (Oracle), SocialCast, Present.ly, and Yammer, etc.) but so far, none address to my satisfaction the issues posed below (which I happened to post on the Present.ly support forum).

Outlook Social Connector: Trust But Verify

Interoperability will also be key - how will other vendors integrate with OSC or will this just be great if you are "all Microsoft" re: Exchange, OCS, SharePoint (and don't forget about BPOS parity between on-premises and/or SaaS).

Introducing SharePoint Writer

Collaborative Thinking

For instance, what does a tool like Vine , a notification service that behaves in a Twitter-like fashion, have on Microsoft's OCS platform? OK, so that product does not exist - not today, and perhaps not even tomorrow (in a SharePoint 2010 timeframe). But it should. Windows Live Writer is perhaps the best tool for offline composition and publishing of blog posts to a variety of back-end blogging services.

Michael Sampson - Currents

Exchange, SharePoint, OCS and Live Meeting. Brendon Ford from Provoke Solutions in Wellington is now talking at the SharePoint Conference 2009 in New Zealand. BPOS is a subset of Microsoft Online Services (cloud-based services). BPOS stands for "business productivity online suite". Why BPOS? - if your server room is a disaster zone, perhaps BPOS can help out. - if your server room is old and out-of-date, perhaps BPOS gives you a new way of doing things. -

Turning Instant Messaging and Presence Upside-Down & Inside-Out

Collaborative Thinking

Microsoft could do something with the technology acquired from Parlano (persistent group chat was part of the OCS R2 release) but Microsoft's focus is so heavily on telephony that it's hard to see this capability causing them too much concern. The "law of big numbers" keeps them focused on OCS and its VoIP maturity. I've posted a lot recently regarding enterprise social messaging ("Twitter for the enterprise"): Twitter in the Workplace.

Bowling Alone: The State Of Enterprise Instant Messaging

Collaborative Thinking

A company Microsoft acquired (Parlano) had a nice application for persistent group chat (now a component within OCS R2), that was popular in the financial sector. The OCS team or the SharePoint team? Instant messaging has not taken off in the enterprise as have other communication tools, such as e-mail. At one time, IBM quoted that Sametime had around 20 million seats and Microsoft has said that it has around 10 million seats of Enterprise IM deployed.
