Homeschooling in the Netherlands: how to start networking

Mathemagenic

If you know nothing about homeschooling in the Netherlands and don’t speak Dutch start here (and make sure you read part of the text on the educational law). Home education community in the Netherlands is small and a lot of knowledge sharing happens via personal contact or in relatively closed groups, both online and offline. The text below is what I wish I knew when we started our homeschooling journey several years ago and my Dutch was way worse than today.

Technology: ICT4D in the Netherlands

Joitske Hulsebosch

Wim de Bie mentioned his first videoconference with students at a school in Etten-Leur in the Netherlands at his Bieslog. This is amazingly new in the Netherlands. You can see the one hour session (in Dutch) here. Its part of a program called the expert at a distance whereby students can interview an expert by videoconference. Even though the technology had probably been available for a long time, it has not been explored much to bring expertise closer to the classroom

Culture: persistent practices in the Netherlands

Joitske Hulsebosch

Despite all changes, coming back to the Netherlnads after 10 years out of the country, I observed that there are some practices that, surprisingly, do not seem to have changed in the Netherlands: * The practice of sending eachother snailmail christmas cards * The practice of mothers taking their children home from school to have lunch (though now there are some occasional fathers) * The practice of school pictures: a photographer taking a yearly picture of your child in school.

Technology and Culture: the introduction of the milktank in the Netherlands

Joitske Hulsebosch

The story of the Suri in Ethiopia and the introduction of guns reminded me of the introduction of the milktank in the Netherlands, which made a lot of impression on me when I read about it during my studies. Milk used to be collected in milkcontainers, which farmers put by the road side. But when the milktank was introduced (around 1975), the factories stopped to collect the milkcontainers and farmers had to use a milktank on their farms.

I look forward to seeing what comes in the coming months and years. – developing effective use relies on new behaviours, new team agreements, and an appropriate balancing of the multiple tools we have available.

Joitske Hulsebosch

One of the first questions was 'what kind of knowledge should the Netherlands 'export' or 'transfer' ? But I guess the question of relevant knowledge within the Netherlands could be asked at a global, policy level in the sense of what are the strengths and expertise areas of the Netherlands. Can we in the Netherlands also learn from developing countries? I was interviewed for Vice Versa and asked for input.
