Paul is currently reading Richard Moss book The Mandala of Being ,and I was intrigued enough by his description of it to buy a copymyself (the first time, to my knowledge, I have ever bought a book inthe New Age section of the book store). The problem for me with The Mandala of Being is that, while I am convinced that Moss is onto something veryimportant, he doesnt seem to be able to communicate it very well(either in writing or in his free audio seminars).

However, the market responded negatively to the social tools included within MOSS 2007. Strategists that dismissed leveraging MOSS 2007 for social computing will re-visit that decision in situations where SP2010 remains strategic overall. That might have been because of the deficiencies in MOSS 2007 but it also could be due to Jive being a very good social platform. In June 2008, I published a blog post Microsoft's Maturing Social Computing "EGO" , that outlined different ways that vendors could integrate with MOSS 2007 to provide social computing capabilities. NewsGator today announced that it will acquire Tomoye, a vendor that has long focused on enabling collaborative communities within the enterprise. I've only come across Tomoye in governmental settings but the vendor has been in the community space for some time.

MOSS 2007 exacerbated the existing problem. MOSS 2007 forced organizations to regain control and was the "wake-up call" to the governance problem that organizations had created for themselves. These organizations were much better off when MOSS 2007 came along because they already had an shared service/infrastructure view of SharePoint as a platform to begin with.

The above list suggests to me that there may be another, 'through' approach in addition to the 'around' approach that Moss advocates. It's almost the antithesis of Moss' approach, and I see the merits of both approaches.
