New Publication: Public Libraries as Social Innovation Catalysts

Making CommunitySense

van den Assem (2013), Public Libraries as Social Innovation Catalysts. Public libraries urgently need to reinvent their role in society. Through social innovation, libraries may adopt new functions and roles and even act as innovation catalysts in networks of increasingly interdependent stakeholders from different sectors. We show how we did an initial validation of the method using the results of two exploratory workshops with professionals in the Dutch public library world.

Libraries and Collaborative Research Communities

Making CommunitySense

Already a while ago, but still worth a post: on August 5, I was an invited speaker at the Ticer Digital Libraries a la Carte 2009 summer school. Ticer stands for Tilburg Innovation Centre for Electronic Resources, and is a business unit of Tilburg University’s Library and IT Services. My module concerned the Libraries and Collaborative Research Communities track.

Blog Cases from 2005: Christina Pikas on Library Science

Portals and KM

These cases have not appeared on this blog before  Christina Pikas is currenlty a science and engineering librarian in a special library, as well as a doctoral student in information studies. Christina originally started her first blog after hearing Steven Cohen, who writes the blog, Library Stuff , speak at Maryland Technology Day. She   Christina used the library science blogs to point out new technologies and resources, too.

Libraries to accept food bank donations as fines

Neighbourhoods

Trust ordinary people in the north to have worked this out: library users in St Helens are being given the option of paying any overdue fines with donations to food banks instead of cash. We have a government that regards the public library network as superfluous and food banks as unnecessary.

It’s the Latest, It’s the Greatest, It’s the Library

Hildy Gottlieb

In 1967, when I was 10 years old, an ad campaign for libraries swept the nation. There’s a place for you and a place for me, it’s the local public library. It’s the latest, it’s the greatest, it’s the library.

Post-KM and Enterprise 2.0 from Library Clips

Portals and KM

I have been meaning to write about this excellent and comprehensive post from John Tropea for some time, Post-KM: enterprise 2.0, facilitation and complexity. I have always thought that KM and enterprise 2.0 have a lot of overlap and that the new enterprise 2.0 tools give KM people much, much better tools to do their job and a better chance to realize the original vision of KM. At the same, there is much more to enterprise 2.0

Because a library (and even more so the internet) is a place where thousands and thousands of sources of information sit next to each other on shelves, not really indicating which ones are crucial.

I'm going out on a limb here and assuming that the same food service that provided refreshments during our ill-fated, so to speak, visit to a Harvard's Houghton Library in January also serves the Faculty Club (otherwise a lovely place to dine, I might add; last time I was there they served fab sushi). Remember our family-wide bout with the norovirus ?

Public libraries in crisis: it could be worse than you thought

Neighbourhoods

My take on the shameless withdrawal of government from supporting public libraries is to keep in mind that our libraries are one of the few things left that consolidate the public realm. Once they're gone, it's not just hard to get the library service back: it will be that much harder to reinstate the notion of publicness. Those who love libraries may quite rightly be tempted to do so.    Libraries will become just another charity shop.

Linking Files and Notes in Yammer with Office 365 (read SharePoint)

Michael Sampson - Currents

We don’t yet have the ability to use a SharePoint document library in a Yammer Group, but you can create and save Office documents into the Yammer Files tool. Ultimately the files tool should just be the SharePoint document library that’s associated with the Office 365 group of which Yammer is a part as well. These foundational changes will make the replacement of the Yammer Files tool with a SharePoint document library easy-peasy (well, easy-peasy’er).

How Do I Use OneDrive for Business?

Michael Sampson - Currents

He should have set up SharePoint sites with document libraries, and then divided his files across those sites and document libraries. This would have given “his business” ownership of the files across “folders” (document libraries), rather than making him personally owner of everything and then trying to manage being owner, delegator, lead collaborator, and more using OneDrive for Business.
