I learned today that all of these words are similar, and include not just ideas about the quality of space but time as well. Over my career I’ve had the gift of working extensively in indigenous communities in North America and one of the features of many (but not all) indigenous languages is the fact that they are verb-based as opposed to English which is very noun-based.

I’m at a Casey Family Programs conference in Seattle that is looking at applying science to early learning in kids. The people here are learning about brain science and the results of early adverse childhood experiences and what the science can tell us about how we should react in the policy sphere to create healthy kids, families and societies. There is always stress associated with learning new things or doing things for the first time.

Learn a little about the membership. This is where your relationship with the webmaster or the community elders comes in handy. Using terms like “we” and “us” to mean “North Americans” can and will turn off those outside North America very quickly. In a community environment, overt sales tactics are almost always flatly rejected initially, and tricky to pull off successfully even after a solid relationship has been established.
