Research finding: companies who outperformed their industry are more than 3X as likely to have adopted smart work practices - faster at being able to build skills to new markets, more likely to identify people with needed skills, more likely to gain insights and losve problems by rating and commenting, more likely to integrate and deliver data from multiple sources. Sametime is significantly better. See Sogeti (which notes there is some Sametime and OCS in there too).

Or should it be a persistent chat thread in Sametime? It is incumbent on IBM to simply the range of options, whether that is through technology rationalization, very clear guidelines on when to use what constructs vs another, or through offering seamless migration capabilities from one offering to another … so that what starts as a Sametime persistent chat can be transformed into a Quickr place; or what starts as an Activity in Connections can become a shared Notes database.

Bowling Alone: The State Of Enterprise Instant Messaging

At one time, IBM quoted that Sametime had around 20 million seats and Microsoft has said that it has around 10 million seats of Enterprise IM deployed. As an integrated component within a UC platform, it was thought that enterprise IM would finally become a reality. business case, ROI, security, compliance, integration with UC) are pieces of the puzzle. Instant messaging has not taken off in the enterprise as have other communication tools, such as e-mail.

Enterprise Twitter: Not Dismissive, Just Realistic

In turn, ESME and like tools will need to integrate (in some instances), and interoperate (in almost all cases), with UC platforms. I suggest you look at the recent IETF proposal sponsored by Cisco and IBM regarding intranet federation for IM and presence systems - that might be food for thought on integration and interoperability/federation even though these tools are not centric to SIP/SIMPLE.

Microsoft's Unified Communications Predictions

Collaborative Thinking

I would add an open integration and interoperability framework - a UC platform should not equate to "single vendor". The idea of migrate at your own pace actually makes IBM's approach with its Sametime Unified Telephony approach suddenly look pretty good. UC will increasingly span across the PC, browser, and mobile phone for truly integrated voice calling, email, IM, conferencing and presence on the go.

What Difference A Year Doesn't Make: Lotus Connections & SharePoint

Collaborative Thinking

In his post, " Lotusphere 2009: What Might Have Been ", Guy articulates how IBM should have outlined a "surround and integrate" strategy for SharePoint. If IBM can achieve that position (social computing as the strategic direction vs. traditional collaboration and content platforms), then it can then work over time to erode a SharePoint collaboration/content commitment by introducing Quickr and Sametime for instance.
