First Take: Microsoft Business Productivity Suite Online - Communications Online

Collaborative Thinking

What this is not: This is not about hosted unified communications or even hosted OCS. It is better to think about this initial effort as "more LCS-like than OCS-like". the web conferencing component within OCS is not available - instead, organizations need to use Office Live Meeting.

A: I think that the more interesting usage has been around scheduling of tweets and RSS feed integration. The RSS feed integration is also powerful because it allows someone to easily add a bunch of content feeds around a specific interest niche. For example if your core area is technology, you can integrate a Digg, Engadget and TechCrunch feed into your Twitter account using Hootsuite. Tags: OC Expert Interviews

Persistent Group Chat in Office Communications Server R2

Collaborative Thinking

After the acquisition was completed, Microsoft has kept quiet on exactly how it would adapt Parlano's technology and deliver it as part of Office Communications Server (OCS). With OCS R2 launched in February 2009 that mystery has been resolved: Persistent Group Chat - Downloadable Data Sheet. Persistent Group Chat - Official OCS R2 Launch Video. Note: Select "Breakout Sessions" from the top menu, then select "Introducing Group Chat in OCS" .

Microsoft's Unified Communications Predictions

Collaborative Thinking

I would add an open integration and interoperability framework - a UC platform should not equate to "single vendor". I'm not so sure (acceleration of software-based replacement of hardware systems) - but then again, I don't focus on hardware :) but I imagine that in some companies, the economic downturn will stretch timelines and people might want to extend current hardware/software "PBX" systems rather than rip-and-replace in favor of OCS.

Enterprise Versions Of Twitter (updated)

Collaborative Thinking

Most IT organizations will treat "Twitter-like" tools as they do Enterprise IM products which will raise questions such as: Directory integration. Integration with anti-virus and content filtering tools. Integration with Microsoft Communicator and IBM Sametime. Application development (plug-ins, integration with productivity tools). There are several emerging (e.g., ESME, Laconica (open source), OraTweet (Oracle), SocialCast, Present.ly, and Yammer, etc.)

Interoperability will also be key - how will other vendors integrate with OSC or will this just be great if you are "all Microsoft" re: Exchange, OCS, SharePoint (and don't forget about BPOS parity between on-premises and/or SaaS).

Status message shows up in news feed Note: wonder how this works with OCS presence status? Opportunity for integration but doubt that there is any linkage right now. Visa-versa - can OCS/Communicator status be sent to news feed - maybe too much noise (on phone, busy) but maybe not. Exchange, SharePoint, OCS and Live Meeting. he showed a way of integrating other services into BPOS. Brendon Ford from Provoke Solutions in Wellington is now talking at the SharePoint Conference 2009 in New Zealand. BPOS is a subset of Microsoft Online Services (cloud-based services). BPOS stands for "business productivity online suite". Why BPOS? - if your server room is a disaster zone, perhaps BPOS can help out. -

security, compliance, role-based templates, integration with workflow, lists, etc.) For instance, what does a tool like Vine , a notification service that behaves in a Twitter-like fashion, have on Microsoft's OCS platform? OK, so that product does not exist - not today, and perhaps not even tomorrow (in a SharePoint 2010 timeframe). But it should.

Research finding: companies who outperformed their industry are more than 3X as likely to have adopted smart work practices - faster at being able to build skills to new markets, more likely to identify people with needed skills, more likely to gain insights and losve problems by rating and commenting, more likely to integrate and deliver data from multiple sources. Some Microsoft shops are putting in the Lotus Sametime platform for integrated presence and interaction modalities.

Bowling Alone: The State Of Enterprise Instant Messaging

Collaborative Thinking

As an integrated component within a UC platform, it was thought that enterprise IM would finally become a reality. business case, ROI, security, compliance, integration with UC) are pieces of the puzzle. A company Microsoft acquired (Parlano) had a nice application for persistent group chat (now a component within OCS R2), that was popular in the financial sector. The OCS team or the SharePoint team?

Turning Instant Messaging and Presence Upside-Down & Inside-Out

Collaborative Thinking

The need for better intra-domain presence integration and interoperability is clear - but at the end of the day - communication vendors will not be well-positioned as the "master" presence system. Microsoft could do something with the technology acquired from Parlano (persistent group chat was part of the OCS R2 release) but Microsoft's focus is so heavily on telephony that it's hard to see this capability causing them too much concern.

the total cost of ownership is not clearly outlined, a reasonable TCO model would establish a timeline (say 3 years) and include the total costs, including various weighting factors for planning, operational support, integration costs, help desk, change management, and so on.". You need to integrate on-hook/off-hook signaling, integrate with other customer response management tools (telephone, web, e-mail, IM, etc).

Presence Is Too Important To Leave To UC Vendors

Collaborative Thinking

For Microsoft however this type of move is almost unimaginable given the centricity of OCS around SIP/SIMPLE and Microsoft's reluctance to integrate and interoperate with other vendors on a level playing field when it comes to presence.

The repackaging often includes a customized front-end and a unified back-end administration and billing system that integrates with what the carrier is offering to its customers as part of an overall voice/data solution. Integration with survey tools might also be needed if there are any type of testing requirements.
