Viv Mcwaters

I snapped it through the glass while working in Lembang, Indonesia. I like this photo. This cat would visit the roof often. I wondered what it thought of the strange humans inside? . I wonder about. its life - This cat on the roof. Escaping from… what? . .

Rock Balancing

Today as I was hiking the rim of the Tangkubanparahu Volcano in Indonesia, I couldn’t help stopping to try my hand again. I learnt about rock balancing from my friend Chris Corrigan. Here’s the results. . . . . . . .

A belated anniversary

Viv Mcwaters

And I missed this auspicious occasion because I was busy, busy, busy in Indonesia. June 2 - two years since I started blogging. Two years! Crikey. Who would have thought I’d still be here? Anniversaries are always a good opportunity for a bit of reflection. So I’m planning a few changes. Maybe an update on the look. Nothing too radical, because I actually quite like how it looks, just some different images and colours.

Insanely Great Slideshows

Viv Mcwaters

At some facilitation training I delivered recently in Indonesia I used a slideshow where I incorporated much of what I’ve learnt.

Technology: inclusion/exclusion via choice of technology

Joitske Hulsebosch

Her -younger- brother was surprised that she was sending sms-messages (she had come back from Indonesia where everyone was sending sms' all the time).

The structural logic behind corruption

Net-Map Toolbox

Regina Birner has used Net-Map to visualize and summarize her findings about corruption in the construction of small reservoirs in Ghana and in forestry in Indonesia. When discussing corruption, a lot of people from less corrupt systems talk about blatantly corrupt systems and you can hear a condescending undercurrent of: “These amoral corrupt people…&# in their assessment of the situation. As if it was always the decision of this one corrupt individual to take or give bribes.

4 things Nestlé should have done (better)

Ant's Eyeview Blog

If you are going to continue to use palm oil (from Indonesia), then state your intentions. Nestlé, if you are outraged, like members of the public about the environmental wounds in Indonesia, then stand up and talk about what you will do moving forward.

even less touching

Engineers without Fears

Years ago, I was on a beach on a tiny island in Indonesia. A while ago, Patrick wrote about touching. Being an anglo - saxon heterosexual male (I am a member of the dominant elite, go me), who you can touch is pretty circumscribed. You can't touch other men without being a " poofta ". You can't touch a woman you are not involved with as that could be misinterpreted. In our culture (tho not others), touching is too tightly related to sex. And yet touch is about so much more than sex.

Lessons from the field

Viv Mcwaters

After eight days of facilitation training in Indonesia, what did I learn? Before I answer that, a bit of context. I was working for an international aid organisation. Some 55 people took part in the first three days, then 30 of them disappeared to take part in an emergency simulation. The remaining people stayed to learn more facilitation and prepare to debrief the simulation - which also included local staff, bringing the numbers on the day up to 100+.

wishlist / four lions

Engineers without Fears

They would not send me to Indonesia or back to Europe. Today I heard about Four Lions by Chris Morris. Which means I'd better bring out Wishlist - which was written sometime in 2007 (and performed rather poorly one Saturday morning on FBi). Wishlist Maybe I did join Al Qaeda for the chicks. It's so hard to meet a nice girl these days and it's not because I spend my spare time in brothels, mother.

How I use social media

Nancy White

This afternoon I’m spending a half hour on a Skype video conversation to share a bit of how I use social media. I figured it would be good to exercise my memory a bit and unearth some of the key stories that led me to to my social media use today, and perhaps surface some of my patterns.
