Organising Knowledge>> Misclassification as an Act of Power

Green Chameleon

An Illinois court agreed that: “FedEx controlled the drivers work to such an extent that all the drivers were and are employees&#. It’s one thing to get the taxonomy right. It’s quite another to ensure that it is applied correctly, and that content is classified as intended. In my book I talk about classification as an act of power.

How to Save the World

From Anna Tivel , Illinois : Underneath the heavy sky, the highway shines. All the way from Illinois, a thousand miles of waiting for. All the way from Illinois, and not one to be heard. All the way from Illinois, a box of clothes, a can of oil.

Harvesting from a harvest

Chris Corrigan

Last month I was in Chicago working with a great group of Art of Hosting practitioners in the Illinois community of practice. We ran a three day Art of Hosting and then did a one day Art of Harvesting workshop with about 40 members of the community of practice in Chicago. The focus of the day was on the art and practice of harvesting. Our design was simple…we began in circle with a check in around questions and thoughts about harvesting.

When bad things happen

Wednesday morning, September 29, 1982, 12-year-old Mary Kellerman of Elk Grove Village, Illinois, died after taking a capsule of Extra Strength Tylenol. Adam Janus of Arlington Heights, Illinois, died in the hospital shortly thereafter. Bad things happen in this world, it is a sad fact.

He was talking so fast that he sounded like he was calling a horse race: He was attending Fuller’s World Game seminar in New York, which he’d heard about in advance from Marvin Gable, another friend, who was studying with Fuller at Southern Illinois University where he’d finally gotten an institute devoted to his work in Carbondale. “Call Teddy,” said the note in Tonin’s handwriting taped to our front door.

Take a bow, Boston

Endless Knots

While things have improved quite a bit since we trudged around the country, interviewing fire safety officers in such far-flung places as Arlington Heights, Illinois, Riverside, Calif., Readers of The Boston Globe may not have noticed yesterday's astonishing headline on Page 1 of Metro, even though it occupied prime real estate: " Boston escapes '09 with no fire deaths." According to Univ of Illinois Professor Reed Larson,] teenagers weren’t necessarily happier when they were alone; adolescence, after all, can be a particularly tough time to be separated from the group. Some heartening research for introverts.

Meg Wheatley’s 12 principles for supporting healthy community

Chris Corrigan

Today, in our Art of Hosting workshop in central Illinois, Tenneson Woolf and Teresa Posakony brought some of Meg’s recent thinking on these principles to a group of 60 community developers working in education, child and family services, and restorative justice. I’m a sucker for principles, because principles help us to design and do what is needed and help us to avoid bringing pre-packaged ideas and one-size-fits-all solutions to every problem.

Reframing failure

Chris Corrigan

A few months ago at an Art of Hosting workshop in Springfield Illinois, Tenneson Woolf and I had a great conversation about failure. I love working with engineers. They are curious and always looking for ways to make things better. They sometimes suffer a little from bringing a mechanistic problem solving mindset to complex living systems, but more often than not what they contribute to processes is a sense of adventurous experiment. This video shows why.

Insights on the nature of the times

Chris Corrigan

I am here in the Morton Arboretum in Chicago where we are at the end of the first day of an Art of Hosting with our friends in the Illinois community of practice. We have just been harvesting out of a World Cafe that was held on the question of &# What time it is in the world?&# We used a design I have been using with teams and communities that are needing to do deep sensing.
