Do wikis change development work?

Joitske Hulsebosch

I wrote a somehow faithful summary for the icollaboration weblog (which is starting to look more like my blog than a teamblog.but never mind since I believe in making what's happening in the group accessible online!). For one thing, it was interesting to understand from David Weekly what the online wiki niche is. Large companies have their own online packages and stuff (like sharepoint ) but that wikis like pbwiki come in handy for cross company collaboration.

Wikis for project management, research and personal use

Jenny Connected

This year the tool I have used the most to support my work has been a wiki. I have found it an invaluable tool, for both working in small research groups and working in large and small project teams. My wiki of choice is PBWorks – although I am also familiar with Wikispaces, but only through the work of others, i.e. other people have set them up and registered me as a user. I started using wikis in 2008. I have created 15 PBWorks wikis and am a user of another eight.

Community of practice From EduTech Wiki Jump to: navigation , search This article or section is incomplete and its contents need further attention. Communities of practice are "groups of people who share a concern, a set of problems, or a passion about a topic, and who deepen their knowledge and expertise by interacting on an ongoing basis." At the simplest level, they are a small group of people (in this case, about 20) whove worked together over a period of time.

Another great video from Commoncraft : this time explaining wikis. The video takes 3 and a half minutes, and explains wikis taking the example of a group of four people who go camping. When I saw it explained, it made me realise that I could use wikis much more often than I do now. It's just brilliant how they explain it without using computer screens.

Implementing Wikis in the Age of Enterprise 2.0 at Océ

Portals and KM

In this post I will cover their experiences with wikis and lessons learned. This excellent concept will be covered in my next blog post on Océ but the story today is about their wiki experiences. In the case of wikis, a software engineering manager began the first effort. This manager wanted to create an internal version of the Wikipedia to share best practices and refine processes in their R&D group. There are three types of wikis at Océ now.

Four Examples of Wikis Working within the Enterprise

Portals and KM

A recent Computerworld article, Wikis that work: Four IT departments get it right , provides early adopters success stories at Enel, ShoreBank, NYK, and SAP. Enel used wikis as a way to make IT materials more accessible to their end users. Enel also continues to use the wiki as a project management tool (see - Making Wikis Work at Novell ). Separately, NYK uses a wiki to keep multiple peer IT groups in the loop on the status of various projects.

Wikis in Knowledge Management at Law Firms – Part One: ThoughtFarmer Example

Portals and KM

However, I did take notes on the excellent following session about wikis use in law firms, primarily for knowledge management. A third of the audience also said they use wikis in their law firms. Prior to the wiki, documents were stored individually in folders on a shared drive with no consistency. So the knowledge management people looked at wikis. They were already using Domino so they choose the Domino wiki for their initial effort. Every group wanted wikis.

Wikis in Knowledge Management at Law Firms – Part Two: Sharepoint Example

Portals and KM

Here are my notes on the second part of the following session on wikis in knowledge management. This firm already had Sharepoint which offers a wiki so they made use of this option. The wiki use cases include: meeting management, project management, knowledge discovery and sharing, as well as knowledge management. The Sharepoint wiki provides ease of use. The categories work well and provide good ability to create them for wiki pages.
