The games we play

Viv Mcwaters

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of games, play and movement. It was three days exploring games for humanitarian and development work led by Pablo Saurez from the Red Cross/Red Crescent Climate Centre and Eric Gordon from the Harvard University Engagement Game Lab. Imagine sitting around a table playing a game with your friends – preferably a fairly complicated game requiring you to make decisions without knowing the consequences.

Changing the end-game.

Chris Collison

It’s a tough, but dramatic way to end a game – or a career as a popular footballer. The radical idea (proposed by UEFA, which represents European football associations) was to hold a penalty shootout at the start of every international game, just in case it ends in a draw. That way everyone gets to enjoy the drama of the event without creating instant villains – and the game which follows has an extra degree of urgency. Now that would be a game-changer.
