PLUME: five principles of harvesting

Chris Corrigan

This morning we began our Harvesting and Collective Sensemaking online course. Specifically these principles apply to harvesting in complex situations where you are using participatory methods to make sense of and make decisions. And what if collective learning WAS the harvest?

What harvesting tool works best?

Chris Corrigan

A colleague emailed today and asked me this question: “which tool do you use when you have to analyse the content of your harvest with groups?&#. Which means there is no one rule or tool but rather a principle. The principle would be this: “Participatory process, participatory harvest, simple process, simple harvest&# The primary tool I use in complex decision making domains is diversity.

The Harvest: After Event Reflections

Nancy White

Harvest time. The harvest. Reflection is a form of harvest. I wanted to point out some examples of how people have shared out their harvest on blogs, tweets, and other social media to create external value. How can this “harvest&# feed, rather than rot in a pile?

The group, as it often is, is from varying backgrounds, brought together through facilitation work and the interest in taking the work further and deeper. We also practiced the art of facilitation itself, along with some live graphic recording or sketch noting.

Some recent harvests

Chris Corrigan

So a little time to breathe and reflect on a couple of harvests. Second, a harvest poem from the Open Space I ran yesterday in Kelowna. With Open Space these days I am trying as much as possible to have a place in which a meta harvest can be collected and created. Most often this looks like a graphic recorder who gathers materials and snippets from the sessions and co-creates a harvest with session conveners and participants.

Planning in pure dialogue

Chris Corrigan

We started talking and discovered the path as we went being very careful to harvest. As skilled dialogue facilitators, we are also skilled dialogue practitioners and we have a refined practice of hosting and harvesting our own work.

Simple meeting design

Capacity, engagement and authentic learning

Chris Corrigan

What we are getting instead is some terrific collections of tools, handbooks and harvests of processes. This.pdf of a Handbook for Civic Engagement prepared for a community process in the United States is an excellent example of the kind of harvesting that is useful. It should be a hall mark of good practice that process learnings are shared and tools are developed as well as results documented. I think there is probably nothing new under the sun.

How chaordic design unfolds

Chris Corrigan

The chaordic stepping stones is a tool I use to do a lot of planning. The last two steps, Practice and Harvest, help us to shape our outcomes, create a process for impact and create useful artifacts and documents of our learning process that can help others to continue the conversation. The chaordic stepping stones are a design tool, meaning that we think through all of them at the outset of an initiative, and refine them as circumstances change.

The tyranny of flipcharts

Chris Corrigan

This does not facilitate a good flow in a conversation, and it is rarely a useful harvest of a discussion. Putting the harvest tool in the middle of the table allows everything we are doing to be directed towards the centre. This is the basis of the way we harvest in World Cafe and it is brilliant. It democratizes the harvesting tools in a powerful way. In these three tools you have everything you need to scale your work. Flipcharts.

I was able to see the crude boundaries of traditional evaluation methods very clearly and was able to see that most of the work I do in the world – facilitating strategic conversations – was actually a core practice of developmental evaluation.
