Through the Dark Mountain: A Harvest of Myths

How to Save the World

Here is the Harvest, in alphabetical order (grouping seemingly related myths, and some of their opposites): Activism: that well-coordinated activism at the right scale can change the world. Failure is Bad: that success, no matter how achieved, is laudable, but failure is shameful.

Some recent harvests

Chris Corrigan

So a little time to breathe and reflect on a couple of harvests. Second, a harvest poem from the Open Space I ran yesterday in Kelowna. With Open Space these days I am trying as much as possible to have a place in which a meta harvest can be collected and created. Most often this looks like a graphic recorder who gathers materials and snippets from the sessions and co-creates a harvest with session conveners and participants.

This is often when those of us who are consulting facilitators are brought into an organization. The second phase is hosting and harvesting. A further consideration for hosting and harvesting is to balance the three domains of work, relationship and co-learning.

We were hired by the Aboriginal Housing Management Association of BC to facilitate dialogue at this 800 person international gathering. The first cafe would look at stories of success, the second would think about how to build capacity to support success and the third was focused on institutional development. The theme of the conference was “Sharing our Stories, Sharing our Successes.”

Insights on the nature of the times

Chris Corrigan

We have just been harvesting out of a World Cafe that was held on the question of &# What time it is in the world?&# We used a design I have been using with teams and communities that are needing to do deep sensing. I listened with a poet’s ear tuned to the harvest and this is what I heard: You have to be ready to die on the hill atop which you have heard the deepest call of the world.

Beyond Sustainability

If we are successful in doing anything, the results will be quietly influential over a period of years. Tim Merry,Luana Busby-Neff and I will be holding space all week for this, and I’ll try to blog about our experiences as we go, but I suspect my energy won’t be focused in a harvesting direction all the time. Lots of space to hold at many levels, and in many ways, this is one of the most significant facilitation challenges I have ever undertaken.
