PLUME: five principles of harvesting

Chris Corrigan

This morning we began our Harvesting and Collective Sensemaking online course. Specifically these principles apply to harvesting in complex situations where you are using participatory methods to make sense of and make decisions. It can be documentation, relationships and insight.

Hosting the harvest

Chris Corrigan

Steven Wright and I are working together here in Vancouver at an international conference on restorative practices , the kinds of things that people do to bring relationship and community to the justice, education and community systems that more often than not drive us apart.

Some recent harvests

Chris Corrigan

So a little time to breathe and reflect on a couple of harvests. Second, a harvest poem from the Open Space I ran yesterday in Kelowna. With Open Space these days I am trying as much as possible to have a place in which a meta harvest can be collected and created. Most often this looks like a graphic recorder who gathers materials and snippets from the sessions and co-creates a harvest with session conveners and participants.

Planning in pure dialogue

We started talking and discovered the path as we went being very careful to harvest. As skilled dialogue facilitators, we are also skilled dialogue practitioners and we have a refined practice of hosting and harvesting our own work.

Simple meeting design

Chris Corrigan

First we design the bookends: Purpose on the one hand and harvest/action on the other hand. The meeting itself therefore become the vehicle by which a group of people reach a harvest and wise action ground in a purpose and a deep need. Harvest. What do you want to harvest? -

This is often when those of us who are consulting facilitators are brought into an organization. The second phase is hosting and harvesting. A further consideration for hosting and harvesting is to balance the three domains of work, relationship and co-learning.

Insights on the nature of the times

Chris Corrigan

We have just been harvesting out of a World Cafe that was held on the question of &# What time it is in the world?&# We used a design I have been using with teams and communities that are needing to do deep sensing. I listened with a poet’s ear tuned to the harvest and this is what I heard: You have to be ready to die on the hill atop which you have heard the deepest call of the world. We see ourselves as the gift to ourselves when others make it clear in relationship.

What do we mean by engagement online? | Full Circle Associates

Nancy White

Now that some very crude and un-scientific definitions of engagement are on the table, let’s look at how we, as facilitators, can encourage engagement online. If that is the reality, consider sub groups and weave ideas between them as their facilitator.

On the road again to co-host

Chris Corrigan

I take for a given the relationships I have with my closest colleagues, and the ease with which we are able to work together. So as I go into this Art of Hosting, I’m going to do a little harvest on what working together is like, and try to take that to others. Chris Chapman – my Ireland based colleague – and I are looking to create something more descriptive about the practices of co-hosting, and so we have a little bit of a harvest plan going forward.

Meg Wheatley’s 12 principles for supporting healthy community

Chris Corrigan

Sometimes that is wise, but more often than not we design, host and harvest without consciousness. That doesn’t mean we can stop tsunamis, but it means that when we have tended to relationships, we can make it through what comes next. Without relationships our communities die, individuals give up, and possibility evaporates. The time for apologizing for relationship building is over.
