Polarities to help design harvesting

Chris Corrigan

Yesterday in a webinar for the Art of Hosting Applied Practice cohort I threw out a set of ideas around harvesting that were prompted a bit by experience and a bit by the questions that participants were asking. ” The act of paying attention to that is called “harvesting.” ” Harvesting planning needs a coherent scheme to structure the work and it is important to focus on all kinds of different outputs and outcomes from a process. Personal/collective.

Here is the Harvest, in alphabetical order (grouping seemingly related myths, and some of their opposites): Activism: that well-coordinated activism at the right scale can change the world. Self-improvement: that we need to work hard to personally grow and improve.

The curse of predetermining outcomes

Chris Corrigan

Entraining your mind to outcomes is the hardest practice to beat as a facilitator working in complexity. It will shape your process, and cause you to harvest only what you are looking for, missing out on the juiciest, most powerful places of potential in a system.

Simple meeting design

Chris Corrigan

The tyranny of flipcharts

Chris Corrigan

As I wrote this I am in an Open Space meeting where people are gathered around flipcharts, and rather than organize in tight circles, several groups are arranged in semi circles facing one person holding a marker and writing on the flipchart. This does not facilitate a good flow in a conversation, and it is rarely a useful harvest of a discussion. Putting the harvest tool in the middle of the table allows everything we are doing to be directed towards the centre.
