Mapping the World: the INGENAES Global Symposium and Learning Exchange

Making CommunitySense

It all started with mapping the local: the Tilburg Urban Farming community. This January, however, I ended up mapping the global end of the agricultural spectrum: the INGENAES Global Symposium and Learning Exchange, held in Lusaka, Zambia. Mapping the Conference.

Simon Hearn on Online Community Facilitation

Nancy White

What Simon Hearn of the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) does for his community of Outcome Mapping practitioners is facilitation, management, technology stewardship and plain old leadership.

Exploring future possibilities by mapping “dispositionalities”

Chris Corrigan

Map the current state of the system, including its dominant flows, eddy points and whirlpools. We then had the group cluster all the post-its to find major categories, and we sorted post it notes within the categories to produce a map that was rendered by our graphic recorder, Corrina Keeling. The resulting map shows the major areas for change making, specific “acupuncture points” and the “energy gradients associated with the dominant patterns.”

From a facilitation standpoint, I was worried that the groupings we created for the maps would not work. We had to group people working on different projects together, and in the past, I’d seen better results when an intact team or group maps their project.

How chaordic design unfolds

Chris Corrigan

Here is a little diagram of the chaordic stepping stones mapped onto the diverge/converge map. This is a pretty geeky Art of Hosting map, but essentially it describes the way planning unfolds in practice. The last two steps, Practice and Harvest, help us to shape our outcomes, create a process for impact and create useful artifacts and documents of our learning process that can help others to continue the conversation.

The tyranny of flipcharts

Chris Corrigan

This does not facilitate a good flow in a conversation, and it is rarely a useful harvest of a discussion. Unless you use a flipchart creatively, such as by mind mapping or the way Jim Rough does it in Dynamic Facilitatio n, flipcharts are useless linear beasts. Putting the harvest tool in the middle of the table allows everything we are doing to be directed towards the centre. This is the basis of the way we harvest in World Cafe and it is brilliant.

Just about the most fun you can have getting paid

Chris Corrigan

We were hired by the Aboriginal Housing Management Association of BC to facilitate dialogue at this 800 person international gathering. Our first challenge was to think about how to harvest stories and connections quickly from 800 people. Steven whipped up a digital mind map which we projected on our screens. While Steven created a map to chart the highlights, Geoff and I prepared a slideshow that touches on the headlines.

Strategic planning using the World Cafe and Open Space

Chris Corrigan

Harvested main themes in group. Opportunity map outcomes. Developed the values for the non-profit from this harvest. Our process ran like this: Prepare a harvest wall with five blank spots for reporting, each with one of the five topic headings. These participatory processes are far more than “just talk&# and with wise planning and focussed harvests, they are a very fast way to make headway on what can otherwise be tedious planning processes.

What do we mean by engagement online? | Full Circle Associates

Now that some very crude and un-scientific definitions of engagement are on the table, let’s look at how we, as facilitators, can encourage engagement online. If that is the reality, consider sub groups and weave ideas between them as their facilitator.
