Polarities to help design harvesting

Chris Corrigan

Yesterday in a webinar for the Art of Hosting Applied Practice cohort I threw out a set of ideas around harvesting that were prompted a bit by experience and a bit by the questions that participants were asking. ” The act of paying attention to that is called “harvesting.” ” Harvesting planning needs a coherent scheme to structure the work and it is important to focus on all kinds of different outputs and outcomes from a process. What harvesting tool works best?

Chris Corrigan

A colleague emailed today and asked me this question: “which tool do you use when you have to analyse the content of your harvest with groups?&#. The principle would be this: “Participatory process, participatory harvest, simple process, simple harvest&# The primary tool I use in complex decision making domains is diversity. Exploring future possibilities by mapping “dispositionalities”

Chris Corrigan

We deliberately created a space where things were allowed to fail or radically change and we harvested learning all the way along. This learning was summarized in a report, but the bigger harvest was the capacity that each participant built to take steps to sense, design and implement change initiatives with a better informed complexity approach. We used a lovely redux of Peter Block’s work to help frame our conversation about design and implementation. I am not a fan of giving people groundrules, because as a facilitator it puts me in the position of enforcer, and gives people an out for how the behave towards one another.

How complexity principles can inform participatory process design

Chris Corrigan

Yesterday I was teaching an Art of Hosting here in Calgary, where we were looking at Cynefin and then followed with a discussion about how the nature of complex systems compels us to make important design choices when we are facilitating participatory processes to do work in organizations.

They are generative principles, rather than proscriptive principles, meaning that they generate creative implementation rather than restricting creativity. Collaboration, dialogue, visioning, possibility and choice creating, innovation, letting go of limiting beliefs, learning, and creative implementation are all dependant on good conversational practice. The ability to sense, converse, harvest and act together depends on good hosting and good conversation.
