Creative Facilitation – the Book!
JANUARY 8, 2013
It is always in ‘beta’, always a work in progress and no amount of requests for cookie-cutter approaches to facilitation can stand up in the face of the messy, unpredictable and ever-changing world of actual facilitation with living, breathing humans.

How my bad French made me a better facilitator
FEBRUARY 27, 2015
I recently went on a mission to Cameroon, where one of my tasks was to facilitate a workshop with about 100 participants. You’ve guessed it: What I cannot do in French is facilitate a participatory workshop with 100 participants.
The simplest facilitation tip to build group capacity
DECEMBER 10, 2015
Thinking that the facilitator has the answers is one of the biggest problems with the way people are entrained to relate to facilitators. Imagine: you have just done an elegant and energetic Open Space opening and you are ready to hand the process over to the group. Just as you start to walk out of the circle and let the group take over, a hand goes up “Excuse me, but what if no one comes to my session?” Facilitation Leadership Open Space
Facilitate! Don’t be a Clever-Bully
AUGUST 23, 2013
to teach, is to facilitate a Net-Map session well. So many things can happen in the group that maps, they can misunderstand instructions, get stuck in analysis paralysis, launch into conflict and, oh yes, they can get it all wrong! Clever-Bully (picture by Diamond Select Toys).

The 10 basic online tools every trainer and online facilitator should know
JANUARY 13, 2015
I therefore completely understand that facilitators of learning and change processes and trainers/teachers can''t see the wood for the trees. I have good news: I can recommend a group of 10 tools that are so useful that each facilitator needs to know them and should be able to use them. I think there are many facilitators already doing this. Furthermore, as a facilitator of a group you can create a list for others to follow, participants or around a particular topic.
Ideal group sizes
MARCH 6, 2012
Second, a friend asked me the question “What is the idea group size for collaborative process?” Small groups can help refine and test good ideas, and large groups can help propagate ideas and connect them to larger patterns. In small group work, in general, working with an odd number is helpful because it creates an instability that keeps the group moving. Art of Hosting Collaboration Conversation Design Facilitation

Michael Sampson - Currents
FEBRUARY 4, 2016
Over the past year I have been doing a lot of work around the effective use of Office 365, and have been wanting to develop a group of people in Christchurch who are interested in making the most of Office 365 in their businesses and organisations. With the arrival of 2016, it is time to push ahead with that idea, and to that end, I am delighted to announce a new Meetup group in Christchurch called Office 365 for Business.

Community Managers and the Art of Facilitating Communities Effectively
APRIL 21, 2011
Of course, I am talking about the role of the Community Manager , or Community Facilitator , which has been my preferred term from the beginning. Either way, the more familiar the community facilitator is with the subject matter that drives the community, the better!
Connecting individuals in a large group meeting
MAY 4, 2011
Groups are strange beasts, made up of individuals – and no matter how often groups come together, each time they are unique, even if the people remain the same. What really interests me is the human connection between individuals that forms the glue of groups.
Participatory Facilitation Techniques

A few weeks ago I facilitated a 1.5 We had a lot of fun with this activity as small groups not only described the topic as a metaphor, but also drew it on large pieces of paper. In plenary we took ideas from each small group until we had exhausted the information.

Facilitation tips for improvisers
SEPTEMBER 26, 2012
There’s also jargon around facilitation. One of my big insights at this year’s Applied Improvisation Network Conference in San Francisco was about how to explain some facilitation concepts to improvisers, especially those who are mainly theatre improvisers, and maybe unaware of some of the traps of taking what works well on the theatre stage onto the corporate or conference stage. The same is true of facilitating. Learn about the bones of facilitation.
Co-facilitating: how hard can it be?
APRIL 19, 2011
Can you pick the co-facilitators in this pic? A few recent incidents have thrown co-facilitating into sharp relief and helped clarify some of my own experiences and expectations of working closely with others. Part-time co-facilitation just doesn’t work.
New emerging practices for trainers and facilitators

Note: Faciliplay: Play as an Online Facilitation Technique was a post I wrote way back in the early life of this blog, before I moved to WordPress. Faciliplay: Play as an Online Facilitation Technique (in discussion forums) by choconancy First of all, the members of the Fall 1999 Knowledge Ecology University (now defunct) Online Facilitation Course inspired me write this. What makes Facilitating With Confidence different?
MARCH 12, 2011
After 13 days facilitation training with my mate Johnnie Moore I’m excited by what I’ve learnt. We focus on who we are as facilitators – presence, commitment, curiosity, noticing – rather than what we know – processes, techniques, activities. Facilitation
Facilitating for engagement in isolated communities
APRIL 24, 2013
There are ways to facilitate meetings and events of all sorts that encourage participation and engagement. This week, while working in Papua New Guinea and helping community leaders learn how to facilitate in isolated communities, I’ve come to understand the following.
7 conditions for a great facilitated workshop
MAY 30, 2011
Be able to answer this question in a concrete, non-abstract way: Why is it important for this group to meet at this time?. Remember that you are facilitating a workshop, not chairing a meeting, and participants deserve to know why they are there, when to arrive and when they can leave. I once knew a facilitator who didn’t own a suit and he would tell clients that if they needed him to wear a suit then they’d have to find another facilitator.
Social media: a new type of hammers for change facilitators in organisations
FEBRUARY 7, 2011
We wrote this for the change facilitators working in and with organisations on change. A good facilitator is aware of both types of discourses and works to connect both. This way you focus on creating a core group based on involvement and intrinsic motivation, rather than by function.

Facilitation and equilibrium
SEPTEMBER 29, 2014
Some beliefs and theories in facilitation have always bothered me. What appears to be sane and sensible on paper, in reality, just simply don’t stack up when working with a real, live group of humans. What’s always bothered me about this can be explained by the principle of preferential attachment in networks (and yes, a group of people in a workshop is a network). Facilitation and equilibrium is a post from: vivmcwaters.com.au. Facilitation Innovation
Community Managers and the Art of Facilitating Communities Effectively – Part Deux
APRIL 25, 2011
Great points altogether shared across by Glen, specially, the fun aspect of being a community facilitator, which helps us reintroduce, once again, the whole concept of fun@work , which I will talk about in an upcoming blog post, as I feel it’s got enough meat to discuss it separately.

This is probably why I was so attracted to the “drawing on walls involved in graphic facilitation , kinesthetic modeling and just plain PLAY as a way to work together. I have only played with them in small, informal groups and have not used them with clients.
Facilitation Zen: Achieve more by doing less
FEBRUARY 15, 2012
Will I eventually facilitate participatory group processes by inviting no-one to sit in a dark room and breathe with me? When you are called to facilitate group processes it is easy to think that you get more effective the harder you work, the more methods you know and use and the more of your wisdom you share. And some of them will think – or even say – “Please, do what you want with us, but stop facilitating us!”
