Can we learn graphic recording in 4 hours and actually DO something? YES! Part 1

Rarely do I get to go to an event with graphic recording as my primary duty. It is often an “extra” that I include in my facilitation practice. This year I was invited to the 7th Annual GFRAS Meeting in Limbe, Cameroon as their graphic recorder!

Some recent harvests

Chris Corrigan

So a little time to breathe and reflect on a couple of harvests. Second, a harvest poem from the Open Space I ran yesterday in Kelowna. With Open Space these days I am trying as much as possible to have a place in which a meta harvest can be collected and created. Most often this looks like a graphic recorder who gathers materials and snippets from the sessions and co-creates a harvest with session conveners and participants.

Reflections on PGviz18

This was a fitting place for our circle discussions which focused on facilitation techniques but also deeper societal issues. This was a fitting start as much of what we do as graphic facilitators is try to understand how our tools can be of service to support others in their path.

We then had the group cluster all the post-its to find major categories, and we sorted post it notes within the categories to produce a map that was rendered by our graphic recorder, Corrina Keeling. The tyranny of flipcharts

Chris Corrigan

This does not facilitate a good flow in a conversation, and it is rarely a useful harvest of a discussion. Putting the harvest tool in the middle of the table allows everything we are doing to be directed towards the centre. This is the basis of the way we harvest in World Cafe and it is brilliant. It democratizes the harvesting tools in a powerful way. Learn how to do graphic recording. Flipcharts.

Beauty and speed

Chris Corrigan

Lately I have been working as much as possible with graphic recorders who bring a level of beauty into a meeting that has a similar effect. When people work with graphic recorders, they approach the wall reflectively, take care to choose their words and make sure that what they are adding to the record is somehow commensurate with the aesthetic experience being captured.
