F2F and online teaching

Jenny Connected

Mike Bogle’s reflection on his presentation skills – [link] – strikes a chord with me. I always unpick my ‘performance’ in detail after a presentation or a course, either online or offline – but I tend not to do it in public as Mike has done. Through a long career which has involved being interviewed, seeking promotion etc., I am still very cautious about who I reveal my weaknesses to.

Technologies: online versus f2f

Joitske Hulsebosch

Since we met f2f I forgot his name & it took me some time to find oyster on the web (didn't know how you write it). Yesterday I met the first person who knew my blog without knowing me!! Weird experience. Since I had few comments, you have the impression that nobody is reading your blog.

2006 Post on sharing online from F2F events still has juice!

10 years later, the tools have changed, but the practices for sharing out from F2F events are pretty much the same. I was checking a link and came across this post from 2006. Learning, Capturing and Sharing Conference Artifacts .

1 Day F2F = 1,000 emails

TNT - The Network Thinker

1 Day F2F > 1,000 emails Originally published July 4, 2007We often get the technology right, but forget about the sociology and then wonder why our computing systems do not live up to expectations. Here is an excellent article on why the social is so important in social computing.

Technology: building relationships through online and f2f interactions

Joitske Hulsebosch

I noticed f2f it is easier to fill in some details which seem kind of trivial, yet the lack thereof online may lead to plenty assumptions. (I I met Manju Chatani in Accra, Manju lives in Accra, is an online facilitator and interested in ICT4D. I interviewed Manju in July for my work with GINKS. Then we were together in the online facilitation workshop of Nancy White which was a great experience and we learned and interacted a lot online for 5 weeks.

Nancy White on the necessity (or not) of face-to-face

Endless Knots

I share your experience of people wanting to have F2F trainings for online facilitation, etc. If it is not AT LEAST a blend of F2F and online, I won't do it anymore. I've had situations where we had plenty of F2F, process support, etc and the teams failed. Then, IF THEY CAN, come together F2F to validate their online experience. The great comments on the " Is face-to-face necessary? " post continue to roll in.

Had to elevate it: If a picture is worth a 1000 words, then a day F2F is worth a 1000 emails/tweets. Priceless. Below Valdis , one of the originals in social network analysis, comments on whether face-to-face is necessary.

The Right Blend?

A dash of VLE, a pinch of f2f, and a large dollop of motivation. Blended learning has been around for a while, and some studies claim that it can be more effective than purely f2f learning. 4 F2f and online link: In a blended course the online and f2f parts need to be clearly linked.

Online Residency

Simon amazingly had never used Elluminate before, and thought he was attending as a f2f delegate, but was co-opted at the last minute to look after the online group. In the morning when the f2f participants broke out into working groups, Lawrie Phipps - made sure we were included by coming and speaking to us, which was great. So the mix of experimentation, working it out as we were going along, seeing if we could project ourselves into the f2f space, was fun and interesting.

In addition, online learners seem to need and take/create more space than f2f learners, i.e. contemplative learning space. What does the need for ‘space’ mean for the design of blended learning, integrated online and f2f learning, and a prescribed curriculum? Discussions about our recently published paper, Footprints of Emergence , continue, particularly with respect to the relationship between curriculum design intentions and the learner experience.

At other times they have to shout to be heard – particularly when there is a lot of background noise from the f2f group. The f2f group have also had to adjust/find their voice in this attempt to fully integrate online and f2f learning. This has slowed up the natural flow of discussion across the f2f group and again it has been the more assertive (and possibly less sensitive to the complexities of balancing voices) who have ensured that their voice has been heard.

Being there together via presence and activity traces

Mathemagenic

In this case we tend to think of f2f as a solution, but it’s very resource-intensive and is not always feasible. So, that would be an alternative/additional to f2f way of “being there together&#. At the same time, to use them as a reliable substitution of f2f encounters all the right people have to be there (ideally in the same channel), which hard to expect.
