Changing with technology: the example of collaborating with slack

Joitske Hulsebosch

I think it''s a funny example of the influence of technology on our communication and how our habits are sometimes matching older technologies. I find it fascinating to see how our habits change (or don''t change at all!) driven by new technologies.

A Great Example of Collaborative Tools Being Integrated into an Appropriate Way of Working

Michael Sampson - Currents

Writing on the StackExchange Blog , David lays out an argument for private offices. This is at odds with many firms who are pursuing open offices. David’s reasons for private offices at Stack Exchange HQ include: – it’s the way their smart people prefer to work. – it allows people to find their own rhythm of work (including work hours, use of space, and using your attention, and by implication allowing / minimizing distractions).

Examples of interest from The Imitation Game

Chris Corrigan

So here are a few examples. Combining that capacity with the incredible engineering talents of Turing and his crew provides some excellent stories and examples of Cynefin dynamics at work. Our traditional Boxing Day movie this year was The Imitation Game, the new film about Alan Turing and his team’s efforts to break the Enigma code used by the German Navy in the Second World War.

Redesign of face-to-face learning programmes into blended learning - an example in the Netherlands

I worked with a team of an internal academy to redesign their learning programs into powerful blended products. The challenge is ofcourse not to make a programme blended because it is fashionable but to improve the programme.

In the coming weeks and months I’ll try to elaborate through examples from projects that I’ve been involved with. Let me give you an example: English languge textbooks for decades, have begun with present tense (aspect) verbs with an emphasis on the 3rd person. When they come to learn something they are looking for content, examples opportunities to practice and feedback etc. Ken Carroll networks, languages, and learning 2.0

An Example of Emergent Learning

Jenny Connected

The open connectivism courses that are run by Stephen Downes and George Siemens are rich with examples of emergent learning and whether or not intended, the design of these courses can promote emergent learning. The CCK11 Elluminate session on Friday last (4 th Feb – recording here ) was an example of this. He took the example of the word ‘Paris’ and showed that this means different things to different people.

Practical examples: Km4dev

Talking to people from MDF , a training and consultancy firm, we had to conclude that there are few practical examples of communities of practice in a development context, so I'll try and search harder (haven't even started the whole km4dev journal for instance).

I thought I could list all practical examples I gathered so far, so that if people want to know about communities of practices in a development cooperation context I can refer to this blogpost.

Practical examples: 5 examples from Latin America

Joitske Hulsebosch

In Intrac Praxis Note 16 (available in English and Spanish), Brenda Bucheli and Gabriela Romo describe some of the outcomes of a workshop on communities of practice held in Mexico at the beginning of this year. The participants were from SNV , PACT and IMAC. The workshop defined a community of practice as a group with a 'common learning interest, aimed at establishing long-term learning processes, innovation, the improvement of practice and the strengthening of relationships between members.

Practical example: Thailand

Joitske Hulsebosch

It also reminds me that I may read old messages of com-prac to see which other practical examples of CoPs in the south are shared David Mould has posted something in with regard to his experiences with communities of practice in Thailand: [link] I recognised especially his important point about the extensive social networks (from the countries I worked in), which are very effective in getting questions and answers across.

Practical example: Ayuda Urbana

Joitske Hulsebosch

Etienne Wenger wrote a case study in 2002 about Ayuda Urbana , a constellation of communities of practice focused on urban issues and challenges in Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean region, or as they call themselves: 'Red Inter-municipal'. The case describes the efforts to assist 10 huge cities in the Central American Region to improve their technical expertise and municipal effectiveness by connecting mayors and their staff into forming communities of practice.

The Star Alliance: An Example of Collaboration

Michael Sampson - Currents

As input to the book I'm writing at the moment, I have been thinking about examples of collaboration in business, and it struck me that the Star Alliance is a great example of the value of collaboration in the travel industry. The Star Alliance is a great example of collaboration - where there is potential to do something together, with clear benefits to everyone involved, and clear detriments to those not involved.

Prinsjesdag as example of local knowledge

Joitske Hulsebosch

Practical example: UNDP in India

Joitske Hulsebosch

Steve Glovinsky from UNDP reported in com-prac about the communities of practice for development practitioners in India. The communities are across organisations. Even though he anticipated cultural resistance this did not occur. The UN platform lends the site impartiality and network moderators who are respected in their own fields and provide lots of encouragement. Some explicit design parameters have been put in place like the absence of titles in the names.

I don’t know why this tickled me so, but I just had to share. If you were living under a rock you might have missed our 2.7 release, which included the most significant interface update in WordPress’ short history and has been pretty well-received. It’s also been pretty bug-free, which is why there was a longer-than-normal period of time before an update. TransUnion Provides Good Example of Social Media ROI

Portals and KM

This looks like a win-win-win-win situation and a classic example of the multiple dimensions of enterprise 2.0 Thanks to LCG for this example. I read a nice case study, ROI on social networking? TransUnion is leading the way , on the LCG Enterprise Technology Blog. TransUnion implemented Socialtext. It makes three good points. First TransUnion is savings millions by leveraging social networks to develop creative solutions to overcome very real budget constraints.

Four Examples of Wikis Working within the Enterprise

Portals and KM

The first two used Traction Team Page , NYK used Atlassian's Confluence and the SAP example did not mention a vendor. This is a comprehensive article that goes into good detail on each example. I have covered the Shore Bank example before and project management is one of the main uses (see - Another Enterprise Blog and Wiki Success Story from Traction - Shore Bank ). From these examples, it seems that once a wiki gets launched in an organization, many new uses spring up.

UC And ROI: Round2: IBM's Truth And Fiction Example

Collaborative Thinking

While our goal for the Lotusphere keynote was to provide concrete examples of how Sametime could pay for itself within a year, we did not set out to provide an exhaustive TCO model. if you were at the keynote, you may have noticed that our composite Renovations, Inc example was followed by one from a German manufacturing firm. The more specific example is appreciated but that doesn't really excuse IBM from portraying an incomplete / inaccurate argument.

UC And ROI: IBM's Truth And Fiction Example

Collaborative Thinking

A few good tips and examples but also some "buyer beware" tactics that folks should be aware of. The example is correct in that there are some costs associated with telephones (and international calls as outlined below) that can be avoided if you use another communication channel. In the case of our Renovations example, if only 5% of their employees make one international trip per year, that would equate to over $95K in savings a year.

Practical examples: community of ICT4D trainers

Joitske Hulsebosch

I'm happy that I can finally link to a four-page summary of the community readiness assessment we did last year, titled Train the trainers or let the trainers train themselves , a collaboration between IICD , Learning Alliances , and an intern from new media and digital culture. The full report of the internship is available at the IICD website. The following recommendations resulted from the readiness assessment process and apply to the situation of the community of ICT4D trainers.

Practical examples: FAO mentions CoPs on ICD

Joitske Hulsebosch

On the FAO site on ICD (Information and Communication for Development) there is a list of online communities on ICD. Unfortunately I haven't found any methodological background on how they function, are supported, etc. and why they are perceived as communities of practice rather than interest groups for instance

Practical examples: the ICT4D trainers meeting in pictures

The ICT4D trainers community meeting in Zambia that I blogged about in my previous post , this time some impression by means of pictures (provided by Saskia Harmsen

Practical examples: the community of practice of ICT4D trainers

Joitske Hulsebosch

IICD in collaboration with its Itrainonline partners did a community readiness assessment for ICT4D trainers. In July, a first meeting was organized for a group of interested trainers in Zambia. My colleague, Saskia Harmsen, was one of the organisers.

A Great Example of Where "Tool" Doesn't Match "Process"

Michael Sampson - Currents

And so this is a great example of where "tool" and "process" are mis-aligned, leading to mis-trust between firms and a waste of time for being involved. What do we take from this example for our collaboration platforms? Down here in New Zealand, the NZ Government runs its tendering process for many things through "GETS", or the "Government Electronic Tenders" website.
