Lotusphere 2011 Notes: Interviews – Kevin Cavanaugh - Mobile and Social

Portals and KM

Meetrix has created an open standards-based Sametime platform that integrates seamlessly with third party vendors up in the cloud, including integrations with Broadsoft for VoIP/IP Telephony and Polycom. UC And ROI: IBM's Truth And Fiction Example

Collaborative Thinking

Thumbs-Down: The concern I have here is that the total cost of ownership is not clearly outlined, a reasonable TCO model would establish a timeline (say 3 years) and include the total costs, including various weighting factors for planning, operational support, integration costs, help desk, change management, and so on. Thumbs-Up: It's important to note here the different between channel switching (from telephone to IM or VoIP chat) vs. time-saved by reducing phone calls.

Microsoft's Unified Communications Predictions

Collaborative Thinking

I would add an open integration and interoperability framework - a UC platform should not equate to "single vendor". UC will increasingly span across the PC, browser, and mobile phone for truly integrated voice calling, email, IM, conferencing and presence on the go. With UC-enabled applications, communicating becomes a natural and intuitive part of the workflow integrated at the desktop, mobile phone or browser.

Twitter Compared to IM, Email and Forums

Collaborative Thinking

As IM systems mature, they are integrated with audio, video and telephony services (i.e., This enables IM conversations to escalate from a text-based interaction to a VoIP call for instance. Because email messages can be so comprehensive, and included file attachments, they can be stored for extended periods of times within the personal e-mail inboxes of employees. Ross Mayfield put forth a pretty interesting question on Twitter (see below).
