Revisiting Calcutta (now Kolkata) after 65 years

Jenny Connected

I was born in Calcutta in 1946 and lived there until I was eight years old, when my father decided that we must leave. India was no longer a comfortable place for the British – at least, in hindsight, I think that was what he thought. I was too young at the time to appreciate the problem.

Portals and KM

Here is a 12" x 16" acrylic painting of a classic New Orleans ventilator cover for the crawl space under an older home and the stuff that grows in the cracks between house and sidewalk,  The best way to easily see most of my paintings for s ale is to go to my Facebook page -  [link]  - and look at Photos and albums within Photos. I have three photo albums covering my art. One is for discounted pairings under $100.  The other is for most of the rest (over $100).

A calendar of seasons for my time and place

Chris Corrigan

It’s a beautiful day on the south coast of British Columbia. A strong northwesterly breeze is pushing wind driven swell down the Strait of Georgia onto the southwestern shore of Bowen Island. There is snow on the mountain tops, but down here at sea level, it’s 7 degrees.

Visiting Kolkata with a Wheelchair User

Jenny Connected

Visiting Kolkata with a wheelchair user is a challenge and certainly not for the faint-hearted. Hand-pulled rickshaws are being phased out, but there is little sign that facilities for wheelchair users are being phased in.

Parkours and pyjamas

Mathemagenic

Yesterday was Alexander’s parkour birthday party with his homeschooling friends. He was the one responsible for preparing it and this added a lot of extra tasks to the planning in the days before. During the party 11 kids were building three different obstacle courses, inside and outside, and then practicing going through them with their own bodies and remote controlled vehicles.

Helping kids learning to move around confidently

Mathemagenic

Being able to move around without an adult is part of growing up. As the kids grow, their space also grows, from house and garden, to familiar spaces and parks, and then to the town, the country and the world. And, since I do not really enjoy the logistics of bringing theree kids back and forth to where they have to be, helping them to move around without me being involved is a process that I’m happy to speed up.

Writing Grey Words

How to Save the World

I n my last post, I played with using a grey colour (#999999) for all words that represent things that aren’t real — that is, they exist only as constructs of the mind , and in the absence of anyone , they simply don’t exist. It’s actually an extraordinarily large list.

Cartoon from the New Yorker by Lee Lorenz. F ive years ago I summarized why I still blog this way: I keep blogging because I owe just about everything about my current situation to my blog. My writing and my readers’ responses have shaped and radically altered my worldview.

Curious About Radical Non-Duality But Hate Videos?

How to Save the World

T he essential message of radical non-duality, as opposed to more historical types of non-duality, is that there is no ‘you’ — no separate person or thing, no self, no ‘awareness’ or ‘consciousness’ or ‘enlightenment’ or liberation, no self-control or choice or volition or agency or responsibility, no time or space, no life or death, no path or process to get closer to the ‘truth’, no knowledge or experience, no meaning or purpose.
