Learning facilitation

Viv Mcwaters

Here I am in Madang in Papua New Guinea, preparing to deliver a five-day facilitation skills training to local Papua New Guineans who will take what they learn back into their communities. And if that’s what you want, that’s okay, just don’t call it facilitation! After all, process is at the heart of facilitation. Yet facilitation is so much more. It takes longer to develop the qualities and behaviours associated with great facilitation.

Facilitation tips for improvisers

Viv Mcwaters

There’s also jargon around facilitation. One of my big insights at this year’s Applied Improvisation Network Conference in San Francisco was about how to explain some facilitation concepts to improvisers, especially those who are mainly theatre improvisers, and maybe unaware of some of the traps of taking what works well on the theatre stage onto the corporate or conference stage. The same is true of facilitating. Learn about the bones of facilitation.

In the midst of facilitation training

Tomorrow we start week two of three weeks of facilitation training. Three diverse groups. I’ve been thinking about how this training is quite different from the sort of training I did when I first started facilitating way back in the dark ages (before the internet).

What can facilitators learn from Steve Jobs?

Viv Mcwaters

A lot of people in our industry haven’t had very diverse experiences. Seems to me we facilitators can learn a lot from this. Facilitation isn’t just about taking a tried and true process and using it yet again, because it worked just fine last time. Facilitation is a creative act. We need to draw inspiration from diverse sources, and continually design new ways of supporting creativity, innovation and agility. Creativity Design thinking Facilitation

Disruptive facilitation #4 – Emergent practice

Viv Mcwaters

The conventional wisdom around facilitation is that it’s to make the task easy for the participants. The world in which people operate is messy, and finding a way through is not always easy – even with a facilitator. And I’m also starting to question the role of the facilitator as ‘process’ holder, or expert. So if we take away the role of facilitator in making the task easy and we take away process, what’s left for a facilitator to do?

What facilitators do for a group – a work in progress

Viv Mcwaters

Every now and again I dabble in different forms of facilitation training – that is, someone asks to learn about facilitation. What they are often asking for are fail-safe approaches to get pre-determined outcomes from diverse groups. I sometimes explore what facilitators CAN do for a group. I think the differences indicate a significant shift in my own understanding of, and approach to, facilitation. Tags: Facilitation

The art of giving instructions: 7 practices for facilitators

Chris Corrigan

I think one of the hardest things to do as a facilitator is master the art of giving instructions. Even for facilitators, public speaking can be a stressful experience, and there is nothing worse than trying to give instructions to a group while your knees are shaking and your mouth is dry. But for all facilitators, and and especially those of us who work with radically new ways of meeting, this is a whole art in itself. Facilitators love our tools. Facilitation

Facilitation or hosting?

John Tropea - Delicious Faciliatation

« Connecting | Weblog Home | Twitter backlash » November 23, 2007 Facilitation or hosting? Chris Corrigan writes about a distinction between facilitation and hosting. Facilitation comes from a mechanistic view of organizations, that they are machines that can be fixed. Facilitators typically take a neutral stand, bring their tools and tool kits to help things run easier. The facilitator is the mechanic and the group is the machine.
