In a month I’ll be attending and speaking at Collabosphere 2015 , the PGi / Central Desktop user conference in Austin TX. In advance of my two sessions I spoke with some Central Desktop customers about their adoption framework, and it was heartening to hear the strategies employed. When executives sponsored the use of Central Desktop, and were actively involved themselves in the use of the tool, results were better than when executives were indifferent.

Google’s Purchase of Video Compression Provider On2 Moves it Closer to Desktop TV

Google recently purchased video compression provider On2 Technologies for about $106.5M. As Gartner’s Andrew Fran k writes, this is a “relatively small sum in the heady world of Internet valuations, for a company that’s been steadily losing money on less than $20M in annual revenue.” However, they have an interesting technology and the On2 purchase may be the clear signal of the plans Google has to enable video beyond the computer, taking it out of the home office and into the living room.

I was subjected to a number of April Fool’s Day pranks today, as recounted by one of my sons : Happy April Fool’s Day! Last night and this morning provided a lot of laughs for me. A younger brother stuck my mouse to the mouse pad with blue tack, and my sister hung a pink and blue dress on the clothes hooks I recently put up in my room.

As part of the announcement around Mac Sync, Luis from IBM also mentioned that round-trip editing is available for Connections Content Manager : IBM Connections Content Manager (CCM) users can now do round-trip editing. This means that while they are browsing for files in a Library, users can click on “Edit” in the browser and the file will open with the user’s favorite local editor.

  Ted notes that desktop virtualization may be the answer.  By running client applications on a server or an employee’s PC, you can make them available safely through a virtual desktop. He adds that tablets may be the killer motivator to embrace desktop virtualization. Over 15 million iPads have been sold. I have seen many in action and my wife is about to get one.
