Questions about rhizomatic learning

Jenny Connected

Cath’s posts in which she is presenting models for rhizomatic learning make sense. She has presented two models. I actually equate this to Cath Ellis’ tube map model, but I don’t think this is what she intended. Translated by Brian Massumi, University of Minnesota Press.

It's not the 30's

21st Century Organization

No one can quibble with the facts that the US infrastructure is in bad shape – but it is not about aging it is about design for the 21st century and beyond. Take the audit on US major bridges and the collapse of the Minnesota Twin Cities bridge which was the result of faulty design. We can not continue to keep shoring up faulty infrastructures and industries which were designed for a past era. Instead, we need to grasp the opportunity to design a sustainable future.

Rhizo 14: Emerging Ambiguities and Issues

Jenny Connected

The use of the rhizome as a metaphor for designing teaching and learning has a positive impact on the role of the teacher. Is a course, which necessarily means there is a course convener, the right environment for exploring and modelling rhizomatic learning?

Binding affordances and GIS in hybrid places

Taming the spaces

An Affordance-Based Model of Place in GIS. This paper presents a methodology to model places with affordances. Modeling places with affordances integrates cognitive and engineering aspects, therefore leading to a knowledge-representation that comes closer to the user. The integration of affordance-based models of places into future GIS will lead to a better communication between users and systems. Minneapolis, University of Minnesota Press.

A short distillation of the Art of Hosting

Chris Corrigan

InCommons is the primary sponsor of much of the flourishing of the Art of Hosting here in the Minnesota and Dakotas region. The Art of Hosting supports wholeness by bringing together a loose set of tools, maps, models and practices that serve wholeness. We use dialogue to work with diversity to create emergent solutions, to hold groups and communities in the uncertainty and fear of not knowing, and to converge, prototype and design wise action.

Extending the Four Fold practice of the Art of Hosting

Chris Corrigan

A couple of weeks ago in Minnesota while we were preparing our teachings I saw clearly how we were extending what we know about the Art of Hosting. The four of us on the Art of Hosting Beyond the Basics team are all global stewards of the international Art of Hosting community of practice.

Re-Place-ing Space: The Roles of Place and Space in Collaborative Systems

John Tropea - Delicious Collaboration

We argue that a focus on spatial models is misplaced.Drawing on understandings from architecture and urban design, as wellas from our own research findings, we highlight the criticaldistinction between ``space and ``place. While designers usespatial models to support interaction, we show how it is actually anotion of ``place which frames interactive behaviour. In this paper, we will critically explore the use of space as a basisfor CSCW design.
