Basic design for extraordinary conversations

Chris Corrigan

A basic diagram for hosting questions that create extraordinary conversations. Each of these phases has to be designed in the beginning, but with space for emergent outcomes. Pay attention to these three stages up front, in the design process.

Introducing literate modeling

Making Sense With Facilitated Systems

Organizational modeling has much in common with programming. If you create or ask for organizational models in any one of a number of text-based systems, you likely realize that. To that end, I've been exploring text-based modeling and simulation for the last few years. Recently I've begun to merge the ideas of literate programming and organizational modeling into what you might call literate modeling. Of course, you can document normal models extensively, too.

Making Sense With Facilitated Systems

Through private emails, we discovered that we shared the belief that the engineering approach calls for varying levels of models, ranging from rules of thumb through the simple, highly-aggregated qualitative models all the way, in the appropriate cases, to carefully done simulation models. It's not the case that every problem demands detailed simulations, nor is it the case that a simple causal loop diagram (or influence diagram, as he preferred) always suffices.

Collaboration: It's Not About The Tools

Collaborative Thinking

To Peter's point - his diagram remains very much a tooling model. Rather than take a bottom-up technology view on collaboration and push tooling as the proper means to participate and contribute in collaborative contexts (as a tooling taxonomy does), I swiveled the model around. We need to not treat communication as being outside collaboration models. A few of my recent blog posts have started a bit of a debate - which is great!
