Why I Post My Favorite Tweets: Simple Content Curation and Archiving

Portals and KM

Sometimes I am asked by colleagues, readers of this blog, or tweeters why I post my favorite tweets (see for example: My Favorite Tweets for September 16 - 30 2011 ). Others suggest that I should use this or that tool to make the task of archiving tweets easier. When I find something through another source I tweet it.   When I am looking for new content to blog about, the first place I look is my own tweet stream (@billives) or the @darwineco tweet stream.

Picking up on the theme from last week’s post, Tech Reporters Losing Control of the Story to Social Media, here was an interesting tweet that could a lot of play at SXSW. It was reported and commented in Economist article, Meet the Curators. The article notes that that "aggregation" or "curation" of other people's coverage is becoming recognized more and more as one of the indispensable elements of journalism.

After tweeting about my most recent post , I was rather encouraged by this response from BIG’s Older People account: Hall Aitken, referenced in the tweets, are the consultants providing support to the 15 partnerships, and last week ran an event for some of them to get together for the first time since receiving confirmation of funding. There were quite a few tweets, and I asked if there would be a round-up and report, but didn’t get any response.

Building on this he goes on to write that the presence of social media, “ increases the need for curation and context and background and reporting. Watching the stream of thousands of tweets that (Andy) Carvin (0f NPR) produced during the uprising in Egypt was fascinating and compelling, but it was also overwhelming in terms of the sheer magnitude of data.” Matthews concludes that “we still need people to curate and make sense of that stream.

There are certainly two sides to this issue.

There was lively tweeting from the event, as you can see from the stream curated here by @nfpvoice , using Storify. I spent today at the Third Sector Social Media Convention, and as you can see from the programme it was back-to-back keynotes and workshops, so I didn’t have a lot of time for video. Or maybe I just found it more interesting to listen and network than interupt people with a camera.
