One way this exec addresses it: remote workers lead conference calls. Tags: Telecommuting Virtual Teams In interviewing someone yesterday for an upcoming presentation, he made this good distinction in his workforce: remote workers, who are indeed far away and rarely, if ever, come to the office, and telecommuters, who work from home but come into the office once or twice a week.

You know the type - people spread out across many hundreds and thousands of miles, rarely get together, have to work together.let me see, I think they've got that virus called, uh, VIRTUAL TEAMS! Nearly all mentioned a similar complaint: super-long conference calls, as in two hours or more. Make the calls shorter.

Pat Lencioni's written the book on dysfunctional teams and, bless him, he's trying to put his stamp on the dysfunctions of virtual teams too. A fawning post on another blog led me to Lencioni's short piece on the three blunders of virtual teams , in his view: they underestimate the challenge of being virtual; they waste their face-to-face time socializing too much and/or going over details; and they don't know how to hold good conference calls.

Great can-do spirit from teleworker

Much of what I see these days around virtual teams and telecommuting--and much is hardly the proper descriptor for HOW MUCH there is--centers on what the "home office," meaning of course HQ, can do for the people in the real home offices. If you work remotely and most of your co-workers are at the same office, you need an ally who'll tell you what the boss has been saying and give you the number for a conference call if the coordinator forgot to.

Interesting piece, " Resolving Disagreements in Virtual Teams ," about how being virtual actually can help resolve conflicts rather than make them worse. Even more, Loyal Mealer says, face-to-face teams might try the same things.
