Context and culture in communities of practice

Jenny Connected

A predominant feature of BEtreat was the impact of context and culture on the learning process. There was an expectation that we would share our experience of communities of practice with a view to learning from each other. However, whilst the sharing was easy enough, the understanding of where people were coming from was more difficult. The disparity in the amounts of funding received by these different communities was huge.

Nancy White

This is the fifth in a series of blog posts I wrote for Darren Sidnick. I am finally getting the rest of the series up. Many people get worried about making sure their group is a CoP. After all, as much as I think CoPs are amazing, they are not the only thing we have at hand.

These notes are from the Academic BEtreat reading on communities of practice and learning, pages 72 -102 in Etienne’s book Communities of Practice: Learning, Meaning and Identity . Chapter 2 on Community raised one question for me. For those who do not think of their job as learning (Etienne is referring to the work of claims processors here) – this is because what they learn is their practice. Chapter 2 Community.

I read a Dutch book about communities of practice ' bronnen van inspiratie' written by Marc Coenders and Robert Bood Unfortunately the book is sold out, but maybe you may find some soon on the black market.
