Digital literacies 5: Remix in the classroom

e-Moderation Station

Remix? Our job to teach language, not mess around with digital stuff…” Giving regular workshops about digital literacies, this is a reaction that I often get when we talk about remix literacy, arguably one of the more complex of the literacies. What is remix literacy?

Edinburgh University’s updated Manifesto for Teaching Online – 2015

This week the Digital Education Team have published an updated version of the manifesto and compared it to their 2011 version on their manifesto website and asked for comment. Here is the text of the manifesto ( in purple font) with my thoughts/comments. Comment: And also cultural?

The Messiness of Rhizomatic Learning – Words Steal My Intent

Jenny Connected

These perceived divisions relate to academics vs non-academics and theorists vs pragmatists and discussion around this was sparked off by a Facebook comment made by Maddie which I have quoted below. In relation to this there have been a number of comments related to ‘community’.

Some Thoughts on Identity

Jenny Connected

Recorded in a socially active medium, however, our traces are searchable; they can be found and reassembled dynamically; they are inspectable, manipulable, and remixable. The topic for Week 4 of Stephen Downes’ E-Learning 3.0 MOOC is Identity.

cMOOCs and xMOOCs – key differences

Jenny Connected

Key activities in cMOOCs are remixing and repurposing , i.e. that content will be created, ideally co-created , through interaction with freely available open resources.

Rhizomatic Learning and Ethics

Both these comments suggest that cheating is simply a lack of deference to the rules. Remixing and repurposing, within copyright restrictions is not cheating.

A New MOOC for May/June – First Steps into Teaching in FE/HE

Jenny Connected

What technologies/platforms will we use/promote and how will our choices affect our and participants’ abilities to aggregate, remix, re-purpose, feed/forward? I will be blogging about the process of development as we go along and it would be great to receive comments from people who already have experience of designing/running MOOCs, or from tutors, lecturers, students or others interested in teaching and learning in Further or Higher Education.

ModPo – Learn how to undo the way in which we read

Jenny Connected

I cannot take the ModPo syllabus and remix and repurpose it for my own ends – not that I want to. As it is – I’m going to just record here the comments that stood out for me from this video.

Assessment of discussion forum posts in ModPo

Jenny Connected

To be considered a student who has “completed” the course, you need to have written and submitted the four short essays, commented on others’, submitted (and minimally ‘passed’) the quizzes, and participated in the discussion forum. Today I am disappointed in ModPo for the first time. Because, I realize that it has fallen into the trap of believing that requiring posts to a discussion forum can in some way measure the success of learning.

The philosophy of MOOCs

Jenny Connected

Unfortunately since I do not speak German, I was not able to participate in the discussion in the comments. Even those who have never participated in a MOOC feel qualified to comment (just as those who have never qualified as teachers feel qualified to comment on how to teach). It is also based on the activities of aggregation, remixing, repurposing and feeding forward the resources and learning that are part of the MOOC experience.

Making Sense of the Rhizome Metaphor for Teaching and Learning

Jenny Connected

There was also the understanding that the activities would be those of a CCK08 type of cMOOC – aggregation, remixing, repurposing and feeding forward, and these activities were in abundance. With respect to content, or the lack of it, a survey respondent commented….

The Evolving Web and Focused Social Media

Evolving Web

For this project we chose Google Docs because it had a UI that was reasonably familiar to the users and allowed in-line comments for peer reviews. In early 2006, I started pushing a concept of Focused Social Media. The point where social media serves as a platform for team focus.

SEEFA symposium identifies challenges to innovation in Ageing Better – it’s culture as much as tech

Social Reporter

Here’s my provocations, (enhanced with some comments I received). All of these points could be remixed into a different set of provocations – and you are welcome to do so. Summary: a symposium on innovation, technology and later life provides confirmation that many of the challenges to making use of tech for ageing better are organisational and cultural as well as technical.

Notes from the Opening General Session at IBM Connect 2013

Michael Sampson - Currents

Three big enablers - (a) technology - cameras, laptops, video online, social networking, (b) community - started small, and grew gradually / organically, and positive feedback for the people doing great work, and (c) remix - needing to overcome the premium of "my original work," and allowing people to build on the ideas of other people. Comments about a video can be added, and they are added at a particular point.

Some of the key implications identified in the study that enable brands to more effectively connect with and reach the Tech Forward consumer include (mostly in their words with some additional comments): Mobilize tech optimism: Brands have the opportunity to capitalize on today’s tech optimism by helping consumers create the brighter world they want to see.   Companies need to embrace this trend and enable consumers to reimagine and remix brand assets.
