Rob talked with four CIOs in the U.S. Dave Bent, CIO of United Stationers was quoted, "They may be brilliant technologists, but without the business engagement and leadership skills, they will not make it to the higher level." This implies that future CIOs need to move around their department and gather a variety of skills and perspectives.

I recently attended the MIT Sloan CIO Symposium for the second time. I attended a session, Solving the CIO Paradox , led by led by Maryfran Johnson, Editor in Chief, CIO Magazine. Panel members include:   Anne Marguiles, CIO Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Bill Brown, former CIO, Iron Mountain, James McGlennon, Liberty Mutual, and Tom Pyke, former CIO U.S. Maryfran said they were going to try to solve the CIO paradox as the role is always changing.

Forrester’s Guidance to CIOs on Establishing Social Media Policy

I recently received a review copy of the Forrester report, The CIO’s Guide to Establishing a Social Media Policy. It notes that, “even in organizations with a social media policy, IT and the CIO are often seen as roadblocks to social media usage.” In stead it urges CIOs to be evangelists in both using social media effectively and creating effective guidelines to support this effort.

IBM Global CMO Study: Highlights

IBM reported that while Investments in IT have long been the domain of the CIO, this is changing as CMOs increasingly impact IT investments in our changing social and digital world. By 2017, the CMO will have greater control of the IT budget than the CIO, according to Gartner.   They conclude that given the business realignment between marketing and technology, the CMO and CIO can no longer afford to operate on separate stages.

One piece of big news out of Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference in Toronto this week is that Facebook has embraced Office 365 for its more than 13,000 employees. They need access to tools suitable for this set up.

Forrester on Using Social Computing To Boost IT Productivity

The report suggested that CIOs should actively encourage IT staff to participate in internal communities to both ask questions and provide answers. Amongst the conclusions is the suggestion that CIOs should encourage their staff to experiment and share their findings with others.
