Governance in a Networked World

I'm a great fan of Ron Burt from the University of Chicago. He is one researcher that has mastered the art of simple talk. Here is a preview of his latest book [link] Now without giving it all away, Ron has found that the "prestige" measure which assesses how many "well connected" people you are connected to is actually of no benefit. The benefit actually comes from the skills you build in translating between tight clusters and diverse groups. I love his phrase ".networks

Since I’m in Chicago this week, and since I’m cleaning out my inboxes (both virtual and physical), I thought I’d share some good stuff related to travel. Feel like you’re flying in Chicago. Need a great airport snack? Keep an eye out for Peeled Snacks , dried fruit that’s literally JUST dried fruit. Damn tasty and sans-chemicals. Head to the site and fill out a 2 minute survey and they’ll hook you up with $10 e-credit to their online store.

Harvesting from a harvest

Chris Corrigan

Last month I was in Chicago working with a great group of Art of Hosting practitioners in the Illinois community of practice. We ran a three day Art of Hosting and then did a one day Art of Harvesting workshop with about 40 members of the community of practice in Chicago. The focus of the day was on the art and practice of harvesting. Our design was simple…we began in circle with a check in around questions and thoughts about harvesting.

He said that when he was growing up in Chicago, he was more afraid of his Mama than the gangs at his school.

What's the word for such travel? Grueling, I think. Anyway. I'm looking forward to meeting and speaking with many new people.

The elephant seemed distressed, so Peter approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee, inspected the elephants foot, and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it.

Back in the day, Los Angeles was viewed as a postmodern harbinger of the future - a decentered, autoparadise compared to the modernism of Chicago & Manhattan. Los Angeles is a strange place - less of a city than Sydney - more a bunch of surburbs that thought it would be, y'know, cool to hang out together but not get trapped in anything, y'know, too serious. Like any form of urban planning. Thanks to Joe & family for their hospitality.
