SXSW as an API for industry collaboration

Community Guy

The crowd seemed to consist mainly of folks looking for the new bandwagon to jump on, and the content was… let’s say “thin” But this year something happened that has, or at least could, change the future of SXSWi and perhaps even the industry. Deal with it: SXSW has changed. Exhausted. That’s about the only way I can describe how I feel after 6 days of SXSW Interactive.

SXSW as an API for industry collaboration

Community Guy

But this year something happened that has, or at least could, change the future of SXSWi and perhaps even the industry. I’m confident that this API style growth was not at all intended or targeted by the SXSWi team, but they have a real opportunity on their hands to help bring the industry into one place every year and truly change how business gets done in our industry. Exhausted. That’s about the only way I can describe how I feel after 6 days of SXSW Interactive.

The crazy standards of TSA

Community Guy

But considering how easy it would be to pass as a pilot, and considering that flight crews and pilots alike have no liquid restrictions going through security, isn’t it foolish to believe that changing the standards without changing the methods of verification is ridiculous? Anyone who travels a lot can tell you how silly most airport security methods employed by the TSA are.

The democratization of opportunity

Community Guy

Last night, I was reminded how much the world has changed thanks to technology. When I was a kid, a lot of my friends took piano lessons. Once a week, their parents would shuffle them off to some retired teacher’s house for an hour to learn how to play “Mary had a little lamb&# or something similar. Most of my friends were living a comfortable lower middle class life, which meant they didn’t have a piano at home.

Without further ado, here’s my list of iPad apps I can’t do without.

Linchpins and Community Managers: The artists of the business world

Community Guy

A: Art, by my definition, has nothing to do with painting and everything to do with connecting with people in a generous way and causing a change to take place. My colleague, Jackie Huba interviewed Seth Godin about his latest book, “ Linchpin “ It’s a great interview, but in particular two things stand out to the community guy in me. Q: You talk about linchpins being artists. What’s the difference between a conventional marketer and one who thinks like an artist?

Bonfire Builders Interview

Community Guy

The answer to this question is a bit different if you’re talking about being an employee of a company working inside the enterprise towards change versus working as a consultant helping those folks see change through to completion. Over at the Feeding the Puppy blog, John has baked up an interesting concept to describe the social stuff vs. traditional advertising: Bonfires & Fireworks.

Mommy Madness: The power of a single influencer

Community Guy

If you were running Mommy Madness 2, what would you change? Last week on the Ant’s Eye View blog, I posted an interview with Amy Krause from Velocity Marketing. Velocity, together with CBS Radio and the North Texas Chevy dealers built a very cool outreach program to get the word out about the new (and highly awesome) Chevy Traverse. To find out more about the program, check out the AEV blog post.

The problem with the Kindle

Community Guy

But no, apparently the publisher changed its mind about offering an electronic edition, and apparently Amazon, whose business lives and dies by publisher happiness, caved. But to take back the goods of a sale simply because a publisher changed their minds is flat out unacceptable. I love Amazon. And I love my Kindle.

The United Breaks Guitars Affect on United Airlines

Community Guy

That said, I would have to wonder about this same point: It’s not like the guitar story somehow broke a pattern of behavior on the part of United, or the 4M YouTube views changed the direction of customer perceptions. Would this cause United to change the way they do business? Did you hear about (or more importantly see the YouTube video) of the United Breaks Guitar song and story?

BlogHer, Comic-Con, and the rethinking of a presidential candidate

Community Guy

Not only were the list of brands sponsoring/participating at BlogHer insane, a potential presidential candidate (let’s be real here, she’s setting herself up to run) could start to change her perception by getting her geek on is a reality. Innovation is simplicity

Community Guy

When you say the word “innovation&# , auto-bill probably isn’t the first thing that pops to mind, yet it’s something that truly changes the world around us. I’ve made the case many times that “innovation&# can come in multiple forms. In fact, it’s often the seemingly minor things that capture our attention more than massive overhauls. Sure, the launch of the iPhone was amazing, no question about it. But you know what else is amazing?

ASK: 9 Tips for Inspired (and Inspiring) Text Communication

Community Guy

The meaning of a conversation can change significantly with a fleeting eye roll or minor voice inflection. Your community evolves and changes over time, as does their response to you and your words. Let’s get this out of the way right up front: text-based communication is extremely difficult. In face-to-face communication, you have three forms of communication taking place at once: words (verbal), voice (vocal), and body (nonverbal). This provides an incredible level of nuance.

In 1977 my Mom gave me a toy that changed my life. Moving. A two year old. Co-owning a new business. Selling a house. Let’s say that things have been busy lately. Blogging has been slow, so as I was cleaning up my desktop tonight I found something I thought I’d share. I submitted the story below to Fray for their “Geek&# theme. (It It didn’t make it). Please stop calling it “Recession Marketing”

Community Guy

These times aren’t about simply changing the style of our marketing. I’ve been reading and hearing a lot of discussion about how this social stuff (social media, community building, customer collaboration) is a magic bullet for these troubling economic times. The term “Recession Marketing&# is being thrown pretty willy nilly. Did I just use the term “willy nilly&# ?? Oh my.). A tough economy isn’t a time for a new marketing tactic.
