Collaboration Sites vs the Intranet (or "and the Intranet")

I attended a couple of case study sessions today at the New Zealand SharePoint Conference 2010, where the respective people were talking about their internal use of SharePoint. In both cases, SharePoint was being used to power collaboration sites (team sites, project sites), and in both cases SharePoint was also being used to power the intranet. For the second, the two were integrated.

UK Law firm Winckworth Sherwood has recently implemented a SharePoint-based document management system. The tool was MacroView DMF , and the partner was ClearPeople. The new product replaced a bespoke document management system that was showing its age.
