An incident in Red Deer this week has made visible some of the deep seated xenophobia that exists just under the surface in Canada. “We welcome people coming to our country, but they have to integrate into our society. ” is totally confounding in a country as big and diverse as Canada. Canada is not a “nation-state.”

There are 15 face-to-face participants here in Grass Valley and four online participants (from Canada, Mexico, the UK and Germany). In this sense the online and face-to-face participation is integrated and it has been noted that it has taken us all less than four days to get used to this way of working. Is it possible to integrate the learning? The f2f group have also had to adjust/find their voice in this attempt to fully integrate online and f2f learning.

In a little strategy session today we were talking about the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People, the fact that Canada has refused to ratify it, and how, with the world coming to play here next month during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, that this is a good opportunity to let the world know that a global agenda item remains unratified in this country. And know this: Canada has refused to ratify this.

After much effort and a huge amount of opposition here in Canada, the federal government finally relented and said he would be allowed to return if he could produce a pre-paid airline ticket. After creating near impossible conditions for his return to Canada, his country of citizenship, and then clearing him of any wrongingdoing, the federal government has now said that he must clear himself from the UN no-fly list before he can return home.
