Integrating online and face-to-face participation in a community of practice

Jenny Connected

Here at BEtreat in California – this is one of the key purposes of this five day course for leaders of communities of practice, where Etienne Wenger and Beverley Trayner are ‘shaking the mix’ as they like to express it – of our understanding of what is possible. In this sense the online and face-to-face participation is integrated and it has been noted that it has taken us all less than four days to get used to this way of working. Is it possible to integrate the learning?

I remain convinced that KM needs to be aligned with business processes to be successful. How we have the tools to make this alignment even tighter.

Academic BEtreat (#betreat12) pre-conference call

There are 16 participants from across the world – eight will be in California meeting face-to-face and eight will join the BEtreat online. I will be in the Critical Friends group where we reflect on the process such as taking care of online and offline integration.

Libraries and Collaborative Research Communities

Making CommunitySense

My co-speakers were John Butler (University of Minnesota), Judith Wusteman (University College Dublin), and Gary Olson (University of California, Irvine). It was good to see that many academic librarians agree that a technical information retrieval focus by itself does not suffice anymore and that serious efforts need to made to integrate communities, communication, and collaboration in their library processes and systems.

The tensions between process and content were very interesting to observe in the BEtreat workshop that I recently attended California. My group hot topic was online/f2f integration.

Academic BEtreat – the technical challenges

Jenny Connected

One of the principles of these BEtreats is that online and face-to-face participants should be fully integrated, so for the most part the online people are projected into the face-to-face room through video on Adobe Connect – where presentations can also be shared. We have been told that this BEtreat is trying to ‘push the boat out’ to explore the challenges of integrating online and face-to-face participation in a course and I think we all recognise hw ambitious this programme is.
