What Aristotle Offers Bloggers

Portals and KM

Many bloggers, such as those in this space, write to generate conversations, as well as to convey ideas. So if blogs are closer to conversation than most forms of writing, what lessons can be taken from public speaking that might help bloggers? This post is a bit of a change of pace looking back into history. Alexander Halavais referred to blogs as “discourse at the boundary between conversation and publication,” in his research paper, Tracking Ideas in the Blogosphere.

The Selfish Blogger Syndrome

Jenny Connected

‘Selfish Blogger’ – This jumped out of the page of Tony Bates’ blog post. I think it is a problem of the design of the MOOC, which actually promotes ‘the selfish blogger syndrome’. I should say at this point that I am a self-confessed selfish blogger and likely to remain so. Each of the speakers has clearly put such a lot of thought and work into their presentations and have provided us with carefully designed and interesting tasks.

The future of online sharing is mobile, appified and people-centred

Social Reporter

However, our hosts and speakers were at pains to emphasise that tech on its own does not lead to sharing. The lessons for People Powered Change are that we’ll need some leadership from Big Lottery Fund and partners in developing a social space, and people who will help with the connecting and storytelling … whether called community reporters, hyperlocal bloggers or social reporters.

Some pretty cool stuff, if you ask me … Well, this year we decided to spice things up quite a bit and host virtual events with external speakers, more than anything else to help bring a nice mix of both internal and external topics to talk about and share further along.

21st Century Learning: The Art of Building Virtual Communities

Delicious/choconancy/online_community

Participating in an Online Community Around the world, another blogger friend and colleague Derek Wenmoth created a similar framework to Lees role-based model to discuss the ways in which people participate in online communities that develop around blogs. My goal is to find ways to bring in non English speakers into my community and those impacted by the digital divide.

Influence

I have recently participated as a speaker at several press events: a traditional press conference with newspaper reporters; a recorded over-the-telephone radio interview; and a call-in event for bloggers. While my role was to provide background on higher profile guests, it was educational this time around to be a speaker rather than an organizer.

Creative Destruction and CoPs

Joitske Hulsebosch

I've been thinking about creative destruction recently because of a speaker I was recruiting reminded me of the term. I think that the way Joitske has invited us in as guest bloggers is feeding creative destruction in a way -- it could push the discussion forward in certain ways and maybe even close off certain topics as a result.
