Blogging for knowledge workers: incubating ideas

Mathemagenic

Weblogs are often discussed as a tool that supports bottom-up knowledge management. However, having a vision and installing blogging software is not enough: getting blogging to work in an organisation means helping potential bloggers to find out how weblogs might be useful for them personally and how to sustain blogging in a long-term. Information filtered by blogger networks that you belong to is likely to be relevant to you personally. Integration

What a coffee corner provides, how to call it and a research agenda

Mathemagenic

The insights from my PhD research on how blogging supports the ‘fuzzy’ end of the knowledge work feed directly into that. Relations between bloggers and more complex community structures might emerge as a result of individuals serving their own interests in a publicly visible way.

Facilitating adoption of weblogs in knowledge-intensive environments

Mathemagenic

Bloggers might use their weblogs to document their experiences and lessons learnt – those that escape official reports, but are usually very useful for others to learn from. Weblogs support serendipity – finding ideas that fuel innovation and interesting people to talk to or to combine efforts for a shared goal. Supporting an ecosystem. Communicate clearly that blogging is supported in your organisation.

Blogs as boundary objects

Mathemagenic

While blogging might provide a window onto practices of the blogger, on a surface weblog is just an artefact: text, links and bits of other media. A combination of those three modes supports accommodation for various practices of different constituencies. Integration

What pragmatists might want to know about blogging

Mathemagenic

Uses of a weblog for conversations with self are up to an individual blogger: a weblog can serve as a tool to collect personally relevant notes and organise them in a variety of ways; this collection then provides an input for reflection and reuse. While weblogs support publishing and interaction, an audience for it does not come automatically; it emerges through discovery and interaction over time. Bloggers discover each other through comments and recommendations.

Blog as a nexus of multimembership and accidental brokering

Mathemagenic

While to an extend weblogs do represent bloggers behind them and are often perceived as their online identities, studies presented in my dissertation also indicate that blogging involves many challenges of dealing with different audiences that a weblog serves (the results of blog networking study provide examples of both ). Integration This is a piece from the current version of final chapter of my dissertation where I discuss blogging across various boundaries.

Blogging to grow ideas: weblog research ethics

Mathemagenic

I also hint about my feelings in respect to a suggestion of not citing weblogs as a supporting source by articulating that most of my own learning comes from weblogs and not academic publications. After my maternity leave I get into the final stage of the research, where the work done so far should be integrated into the dissertation. Partly because it heavily uses the insights already covered in the weblog, but also because I’m not happy with the way those are integrated.
